Conductivity Sensor??

Having Just had to rebuild my Disco 300Tdi for the second time in 6months
due to loss of water, I am now rather keen to find a conductivity sensor
that can be fitted to the header tank and provide a warning when the level
drops.

Of course I am not keen to do anything to mess with the integrity of the
header tank and so this would rule out drilling holes and sticking probes
in. I would like a replacement header tank cap that has probes installed.

Anyone got any ideas?

If you want to hack something together, look for "Qprox" sensors - they
work on capacitance, and you can put a sensor on the outside of a
plastic tank and see the water level inside.

did you find out where the sodding stuff goes?

on ours, it had a new head (and gasket, natch) after it was cooked, and
since then has had a new water pump (which was shagged) and a new P gasket
recently, and it *still* loses a small amount of water.

Wont a cap from a classic RR fit? It has a float switch built in. When ours
broke I bought a Vauxhall Carlton one which was exactly the same (Bosch I
think). So you should be able to get one from a scrapyard easily enough

I was loosing about a cup of water a week, but when it (the head gasket)
went, I had nothing left. It was fairly gushing out. As I am South Africa, I
am not too sure about the vauxhall watsit (Vauxhall it sold as Opel in this
market) but I am also not keen on messing with the pressure rating of the
cap unless I am sure it is correct.

I have heard of various widgets that monitor engine oil pressure and water
temp and start buzzing if it gets too loud but I have not come across any
details as yet.

I can use my national instruments Fieldpoint to do all that, but at a few
UKP (about ZAR30 000.00) it seems overkill.
