I don't know if it has already been done but would it at all be possible for all of us to build a database of lanes but make it user friendly by there being a topic for example say "Kent" "surrey" "Essex" ect then with in each topic each lane to have it's own thread where the person who lists it can put os map reffs, a description, pics, where u went next, anything to look out for ect then ppl that drive it can add there thoughts, pics ect.

Would anyone find this usefull and wanna do your area???? I am more than happy to start with Kent in fact I'll start today lol

ISTR that wayfinder just used a disclaimer along the lines of 'we take no responsibilty for validity of routes - check yourself you lazy ****s' but you could at least use it to get comments about a new lane before you get there

The whole problem is that if you have a database of lanes that are easily accessible to the general riff raff; they will use it. Having no control or responsibility for the information will protect you from legal ramifications perhaps... but will not protect the lanes from those who will abuse them.

The fact that the information about lanes, while not difficult to locate, does requrie a little research; tends to put off many of those who would take liberties and place our access to the lanes in even more jeapordy than is now the case.

This is one of those cases where making the lanes a little more difficult to find is a good thing.

Having said all that...

If the information was globally available, but only to recognised clubs then there might be some justification. However most club members, or experienced green laners would be more likely to come on here and ask for advice from laners in whichever area they are going to visit.

Yeah I can see ya point, i do think it would be a nice idea but it would need restricted access to get the info for all the reasons u have made. But then it would also kind of spoil the fun of picking up a map and attacking it with hi light pens and having the old hit of miss of if u can drive the lane or not

Trailwise ISN'T the replacement for Wayfinder - there was a fork in the development, so now there are two.

The problem won't be solved by restricted access. If anything, access should be widespread and free. Restricting access, or making it pay-only, instantly reduces whichever group has the access, to a minority of 4x4 users and thus, unrepresentitive in any official dealings.

but isnt that the reason to restrict it?

if you give free access to all lanes then anyone can go along and trash them causing more temporary tros, closures etc.

not everyone cares what they do on the lanes and some will treat them as an extension to a pay and play site while others will look after them and by making the lanes easily accessible all you will find is those that couldnt be arsed to do the research will go down and **** them up for the rest of us.

there are plenty of folk on here who will share lanes via email, cd etc. but if i was passing on lane info i would want to know who they were and not just to a name on a public forum.

If you restrict it, then those guys looking for extreme off road action will still find them, along with bridleways, restricted byways, private tracks, footpaths, etc

Better to educate than restrict info.

might be only my opinion but the only way to educate would be to take them with you and NOT just give them access to the lanes to use as they wish. Granted after being shown the right way they may go back but at least you have tried.

To give someone a free pass is not educating them.

Firstly, it is not our place to restrict the use of row. Nor is it in our power. It is in our power to educate though. When a newcomer asks "can you point out some greenlanes"; ir is surely much better to take them out for a drive and show them the right way to do it than it is to give them directions and let them get on with it. Is that not what forums like LZ are all about?

strikes me of nimby are we the police if someone has the intent to play and destroy the lane i realise it may well get a tro but who are we to say no go find your own playground just think how did you start out

We all started the same but then some folk will do the research and others will expect it gifted. if they are prepared to help themselves they will take better care of what lanes we have left.

Im all for more laners and it will hopefully give more support against tros on the few lanes we have left but if someone I dont know other than a name on a forum asked I wouldnt just give information freely in case they go and **** them up for the rest of us.

For example take a look at the 'Im gonna be on telly thread' originally the OP was getting a lot of sympathy for what had happened until it turned out that he had been on other forums ripping folk off and generally being a complete ****.

My point being, you can talk to folk on the internet and think you have an idea of who they are but since you have never met them they could be complete coonts in the real world.

:5brant: ;)

I was agreeing with yer boobler! Ohrasin it a little different maybe but agreein!

Anyhow... as for how we started... I, for one, didn't start by hacking down illegal lanes. As it happens I joined this place.... then went ou lanin with Spyderman and subsequently some others who kindly showed us what was good and what was not.

OK I may not be the tradtional off roader or green laner who's been doin it all their lives...

And YES I do believe it is our responsibility to work to preserve the lanes. If someone is going to play off piste then they are acting illegally and jeapordising the lane for the rest of us... you can't just ignore people who want to take away your rights.... jesus if you are gonna do that you might as well vote tory!

Join a club. Learn how to lane responsibily and how to identify lanes on maps and who to speak to to check them. Then if you want to branch out and organise your own runs.

Job done.

Why risk ****ing up a good thing by flooding the internet with out of date inaccurate information which will lead to several more closures and TRO's.

There are plenty of ways to check and find lanes if you want to do it responsibly, so don't give the irresponsible ****s the information. They can go and break their motors on a pay and play site.

Lol sorry I didn't mean restrict the lanes I just ment restrict who could view the database lol but it did make a good reed with some very good points well made lads.
