I've been toying with an idea to get the defender warmer in the winter months and wondered what people think. I've seen some deisal SVO heaters made using a glowplug and thermo cut out switch that operates upto 75deg C. could these be adapted to the cooling system just before the heater matrix to pre heat the water in the winter months ? I've seen them on ebay for £22 and the glowplugs only use 10Amps. Good or Bad idea?

The volume of SVO passing over the glow plug and the volume of water are quite different, maybe a litre of SVO every minute, the cooling system will probably circulate it's entire contents through the matrix many times in a minute, the glow plug would make no noticeable difference.

You need a diesel burning heater plumbed in or a warmer jacket.

I can't see a glow plug heating the water up that much?? and 10 amps is gonna drain ya battery pretty quick. remember a battery dun't need to be just down a couple of volts & it'll fail to turn the engine over.

I think the OP means to run it while it's parked up with the engine off. So it's warmed up when he gets in it??

What? Oh that was so daft I hadn't even considered that. With a glow plug, it might warm the surrounding water a bit, then when he turns it on the heat will be lost instantly as it rushes into the rest of the stone cold system.

I really meant the water in the block it's self, going at a hell of a speed and straight into a stone cold solid lump of iron and alloy. Don't get me wrong, if it worked it would be great, I am just a little sceptical about it, water has one of the highest specific heat capacity's of a fluid known to man, in other words, it takes a lot of energy to raise it's temperature, going at the speed it will and under the circumstances I think you ought to go for the Bosch plugs, and use at least 4 of them.
