Yes, the lift pump has a manaul prime lever, but I am talking about the idle speed lever on your injection pump, which sits against the fuel return union, if this is too low, it can make it difficult to start the engine, so jam this open slightly before you try to start it next if it helps then this could point to a cold start mechanism fault in the injection pump because these are linked.

No problem, not a lot of people do! They just fire it up and then slam their foot down which actually throws the whole advance fuel injection timing totally out of play. I have noticed this effects the way that the engine drives until its been turned off and re-started again. Something to do with the governors I guess. Just make sure that you have a relatively good engine idle speed (set by the adjuster) so that when it does start cranking, it soon picks up.
 
It will seem to struggle at first but it'll soon pick up if you have the idle speed set high enough to pick the engine up, and not too high to sound silly!

It is OK to give it some revs once its going, the cold start mech ONLY works below several 100 rpm.

I often give it a few extra on a cold morning as its lumpy as hell, and that knocks lumps out of the bearings because its almost working against itself, once its going on really cold morning I then give it more glow plugs to help vaporise the diesel, the TD5 ecu does this, I just think of it as a DIY ECU.
 
it needs a bloody good service to be honest as well, not been run propelry for six months and smokes like a I dont know what. What do you want for not a lot of money ;)
 
Might be worth adjusting your maximum fueling on the IP or the timing a touch, you can undo the bolts which hold the pump onto the timing chest and turn the pump a TINY amount, (mark the pump and the chest where they are before you start so you can go back to square 1 if you need to), do the bolts back up go for a run and see if the smoke reduces, if yes give it a little more until its not smoking (this is if its smoke due to overfueling - i.e. black). This should be done on a warm engine as you want it to be at the most efficient for running temps.
 
i am going to do all the filters, breather and change the oil before i start messing to much.

has anyone got a manual for a 2.5td 110csw 1987?????
 
Here is the Lucas CAV as fitted to a 2.5N/A (this picture if of the sherpa version so its a little different looking but the IP is the EXACT same) the turbo version obviously is slightly different in that is has the vaccum advance unit on it - the 200tdi has the bosch unit.
