Hi all and yes I'm going to ask "that Question"!!!

Firstly, I know the arguments for and against conversion and I totally respect each and everyone's opinion on the matter so maybe the "pro EAS" lobby might want to pass commenting on this thread!!:)

I have had my 1998 2.5 DSE 5 speed manual P38 for 8 years now and the EAS has NEVER been right. I have replaced virtually everything EAS related over that time and it still has a mind of its own.New compressor, bags, ECU, sensors, valve blocks etc etc and it still doesn't want to play properly.When it works properly it still goes up to wading of it`s own accord, locks out on all four orange lights or goes into fatal mode,and never with any faults showing up on the diagnostic laptop.The RR specialist doesn't even charge me now for the re-set. They just plug in the laptop, see no codes or faults showing, re-set the system, give it a quick once over and off I go until the next time!!!! They are as baffled as I am.

Right now it is sitting outside stuck somewhere between the bump stops and half way to motorway setting. It doesn't want to go up or down, doesn't want to do anything and has no faults showing.In fact it NEVER has had any faults showing,even when I have driven into the specialists on the bump stops with the 35 mph warning flashing and bleeping. After plugging in the diagnostic laptop thingy it always shows no faults!!!! No one knows what specifically is wrong and I'm sick to the back teeth with it.

20 years ago I worked in Bosnia for a couple of years and always promised myself to go back and visit the place.My RR would be the ideal vehicle to take but right now I wouldn't trust it to get to Tesco let alone a journey down to, through and around the Balkans and back!!

So these questions are aimed at those P38 owners who have either fitted / converted the coils spring system or experienced the ride after conversion from EAS to coils.

Which coil systems did you use?

Would you keep the coils system but change the make?

Which make would you recommend and which to avoid.......and why?

Can you set your own ride height when they are being installed?

Any comments overall on the ride and handling characteristics.

Finally, would you change back to EAS?

I know there are quite a few questions but it is quite a big step to take and really want to keep my RR. I love it and have no intention of selling...EVER!!!!

No idea what coils is one mine, but it does what i need very well and never any suspension troubles so far.

It was converted when i bought it and i knew nothing about airbags so coils sounded good but if i had to buy another RR would probably choose the air although never driven one.

Never spent time or a single penny on suspension, so far, which suits me fine.

Drive laid back not fast usually but have of-course tried a bit of speed in a safe place and steady as a rock.
Passengers usually mention its a nice ride but a bit high up to get into, (not adjustable), fine with me.

What some anti coil members says about high speed roll over risk is a bit nonsense to me:amen:
 
Removing the whole system will eliminate most of youre aforementioned problems. Your choice but bear in mind the vehicle was never originally certified for coil springs especially as theyre not an LR mod. While most who ride coils have a maintainence free system and heavier wallet it could be detrimental to the drive, wear on components and insurers may not pay out in the event of an accident. Not to mention they keep playing with mot rules so what maybe legal this year may not be next year.

Have you replaced a duff ecu on the vehicle? Especially as it doesnt want to "talk" That may be the cause of all your woes but wammers and data will steer you better than me.

Cheers Druim and aerofabrique. I too have heard all the stories regarding roll overs, instability, void insurance policies, MOT failures etc. If so many people have converted to coils springs then it should warrant further investigation which is what I am doing now.

Terrafirme, Bearmach, brit part....any one used them and are they any good??

Im not a boy racer, if I wanted a fast, flash car I would have bought a Porsche!!:):)

Like I said, I love my RR and want to keep it but have lost all faith in the EAS.

My RRC was converted to coils before I bought it, so I know not of the bennies of EAS, but I've put 60,000 miles since I got it. Most of those miles are highway miles with speeds around 75 mph and mountain road miles at speeds around 35 mph. I've never really felt let down by the performance of the coils , nor have I ever felt in danger, even with a loaded rooftop carrier.

I would like to feel for myself the difference one day.
 
Mine has coil springs. Was already converted, but I've never driven one with EAS so I can't compare.
I do like the ride though and have no issues with having coils. I don't buy all this "insurance won't pay out" b*****ks either. If you have informed your insurer of the coil spring modification how can they not pay out? If you don't inform them you take the risk.
I informed mine straight away and there was no problem and it didn't make any difference to the premium.
The M.O.T rules are another matter entirely. You'd just have to keep your fingers crossed on that one and hope any new rules don't come in any time soon!

That has to be a fault in the driver pack or the loom feeding it. Doesn't look like your garage know what they are doing.

Well clearly you have done sumthing wrong or mised sumin.
I belive a p38 on coil is dangrous.
 
If you have the "35mph message" on the dash there MUST be a fault logged in the ECU. The fact that you can clear the fault suggests that there is only one way communication with the ECU. In other words you can send info to it but cannot read info from it. OBD connector springs to mind. As for the intermittant failures, bad earth connections, corroded connectors or, as wammers has said, the driver pack are most likely.

Thannks for the replies. With regard to the ECU, ihad a new one fitted, same problems keep occuring! And yes, even with the 35 mph warning flashing and beeping there was no fault showing on the laptop (something book??) that was connected into the diagnostics socket. I stood next to them while they did it and they showed me step by step!!

So back to my questions on coils, it seems so far like those who have them have no regrets. Does anyone know the pro`s and cons of the different makes??

It is impossible to have the 35mph message if there is no fault, there is a comms problem you just cannot see the fault code. The EAS is dead simple and it's reliable if well maintained.
