No idea about this, but might as well ask. Are the ECU and the head unit linked in any way, other than just a means to put the code in? As in, what would happen if it didn't have head unit to talk to?

think everything talks to the instrument cluster
Was just thinking would it make a difference if it had nothing to ask for a code? Or would it still ask for it , even if it had nowhere to ask. Or even if putting in a new head unit would confuse the ECU enough to not ask for code?
Or does the ECU not care and would stay in same mode, independent of head unit?

there's very little information on the code or what it disables, other than how to disable it and its a one time code so i cant understand why it cant be cleared unless there's a communication fail with were ever its stored

I removed the head unit and it still shows up Code - - - - on the instrument panel .I have also tried another one at a cost and a BCM. The car can be started with the starter crossed wired with the ignition on and Satnav unplugged and plugged.. However it is supposed to stop running after a short time as the crank sensor tells it to. I dont know if this is correct as Mine carried on.

well at this point if it still runs id be looking to rig up a remote start button, the code could be stored in several places and i suspect without the right software you wont clear it

Well after the 20th reboot of the car systems and genrally replacing the BCM and Sat Nav I got the countdown and the car started on zero!
God knows what I did!
Well done for chasing the gremlins out ( of that part :D ) Never let the battery run low , just in case
Happy motoring:D
