I am going to have to change the clutch on my TD5. I know on a 300TDI you would normally change the fork as they tend to wear through. Do TD5's suffer the same problem?
Want to make sure I've got all the parts before I start.
Any views on changing the Dual Mass Flywheel as a matter of course or leave it alone if its OK?

No, its quite smooth but it slips if you push it hard in higher gears.
The main reason I ask is I got quoted £1300 to replace a clutch with "we always change the DMF as its such a sod of a job to do a clutch on one of these". I don't see why its any more difficult than a 300TDI if you're dropping the gearbox out to do it.
Local clutch centre quoted £440 plus the flywheel if it needed it. And seeing as you can get a flywheel for £300ish the first quote seemed a bit steep

you dont need to worry about fork as td5 went back to cast fork ,change dual mass at same time ,clutch kit should cost £85 for borg and beck bearmach do flywheel for £260 + vat, the dual mass protects gearbox from higher powered engines, the only few times i didnt change them i had to remove gear box and do job again shortly afterwards

How many miles has it done? If its getting anywhere near 100k then the flywheel will be worn. If you put a new clutch on a worn fly it will wear the clutch in no time. Always best to do it if there's any chance it's worn while the box is out.

Why will a worn DMF wear a clutch out quicker

A worn DMF has too much backlash and rock, it will wear the clutch as the friction surface moves back and forth in the radial position and will sometimes wear the clutch and wreck the friction plate in very short time. Yes before you ask, I have seen it many times in the past. I sell these things for a living. DMF's have a lifespan of anywhere from 40k-120k depending on use. Rough running diesels like VW Tdi's are the worst in my experience, but the td5 is fairly rough at certain revs and has a lot of truck to move about so will be worn out by 100k anyway.
