hi was looking for some advice my 02 plate defender 110 has started making a rattling sound from around the gearbox area when car has been running for abit and cant figure out what it could be also in first gear and reverse its does a small judder when taking off
its had a LOF power spec clutch and single mass fly wheel kit done a year ago which i cant imagine thats broke already if anyone has any ideas

Sounds like clutch release bearing, it should have had a new one when clutch was renewed.
Yes the kit was supplied with a HD clutch release bearing so that should be ok just cant understand what it could be i thought the input shaft bearing but would that make the clutch do a wee judder pulling away?

The slight judder is likely the plate not bedded in yet, can take some time. I had one that never did and judder only went with next change.:(
The original release bearing would have had a plastic body but HD one is all metal, this maybe source of rattle when unloaded. Just a guess.

I would agree with this. If the hd release bearing is the all metal construction they do like to rattle. The noise disappearing when pressure is applied to the pedal points to a release bearing. But it rattling does not necessarily mean there is an issue with it or that it is going to fail. My last hd bearing rattles from new but still functions with no issue.

I fitted some LOF clutch components a while ago, and if you used their release bearing and the clips they provide, whilst nicely made, there's a lot more metal to rattle. The plastic release bearing cover and plastic clips that you get as standard may not look very butch, but they help keep the noise down. If everything's still working I wouldn't worry about it too much. There are a lot of other things in a Land Rover transmission that rattle. For example, on one of the gearbox mounts I have an alloy plate that I think might be intended as a heat shield to protect it from the exhaust pipe. Mine has a crack in it so it rattles. I also get a rattle if I wait at traffic lights with the clutch down and the car in gear. This is something to do with the transmission tunnel and the foam pad where the gear levers come through. So there is a good deal of superficial stuff that can be noisy but isn't necessarily fatal.

Thanks aye will keep an eye on it and see if it gets any worse

I’d definitely recommend changing the gearbox oil with genuine Land Rover mtf 94 pretty sharp if you haven’t in a year or so
