Had some problems with x reg freelander (TD4) getting it into first and reverse, now struggling with all gears. Garage has quoted in excess of £1000 for new clutch, hydraulic cylinder etc. basically a renewal of all parts! About 50% of of this quote is labour

Has anyone has similar issues or ideas how I can diagnose what the fault actually is or is that just what it costs?

Thanks

Parts can be bought cheaply from land rover parts specialists and it is really easy to change the clutch your self.
You will need to jack the car up as high as you can and give your self a whole week end.

just had one changed at a good independant 550 all in. Not a job i would take on at home unless you have a engine support, its a big job on the td4.

was told by independent that did mine they have only ever changed one dmf, they say it will stop driving long before it gets damaged, its just a lot of places chance them just for the sake of it.

Replace the clutch master cylinder first and bleed the system, £100 ish.
Only then if there is no improvement it's gearbox out for the rest.

I think you might find a few ex freelander owners on here might disagree with that. Reports of juddering & vibration on idle with a strange pedal feel aren't uncommon, & it's worth checking things if you're gonna spend a grand anyway.

I agree with Chaser.
My TD4 was having the same symptoms you describe. I took it to the local Independent and they changed the master cylinder. Problem solved........for now at least.
