my 90 has just been dropped of at the garage with the clutch slipping and smelling, it has had 2 clutches in 2000 miles and the garage said it is drivers error, it is used to tow a horse box and get me around the woods on hard tracks going off tracks sometimes, it has got stuck a couple of times but always pulls its self out( i have been stuck in worse places in previouse landrovers). any ideas why it keeps burning out clutches/

Do you use the clutch pedal as a foot rest? This can seriously reduce the life of your clutch and cause damage to the thrust bearing

The hydraulics or push rod on the slave could be a mismatch or it's been disturbed/altered somehow, a wrong component can put all the clearances out so it's the equivalent of sitting on the clutch all the time.

If it is just a little bit it will probably lock up most of the time no bother but on acceleration it will slip a bit wearing the plate out. I had a similar issue once, the push rod was constantly pushing the release bearing hard up against the plate, not hard enough to disengage it, but hard enough the release bearing was always having to do it's job, they usually sit with no pressure on them. I shimmed it out (you can get shims) and that sorted it.

no ,that is what the garage asked me and i definetly dont, between the first 2 clutches there was only 10-14 days and i didnt get it stuck, i was reversing a trailer( empty quad bike trailer)

If you can find out if the garage fitted a complete full clutch and new thrust bearing. Some crank garages sometimes only put a new plate in there which is almost no use.

dont know as i am a gamekeeper and i am not mechanicaly minded. my boss wonders why the clutch keeps going and i can only think the garage has not fitted it properly or there is an other reason or part causing the problem

Look up thrust/release bearing and see what it does.

This is NOT why is clutch is SLIPPING!

A land rover clutch cover will last for 2 or 3 plates. I would ALWAYS change it, no point it leaving anything left untouched.

This is really good advice!:)

The first time I removed a gearbox again because I tried to save money was the last.Always change it all ,waynec, you will regret it if not:(
