Hi,
I have replaced the master cylinder 3 times since december.
it keeps leaking fluid into the footwell.

Each time after its replaced it last about a month then starts leaking again.

WHATS WRONG

My mechanic reckons i need a new clutch but im not sure and its expensive.

Any Ideas

Are the other parts of the clutch working ok? Sounds like the slave is siezing or fork sticking and the pressure of the master is pushing back through the seals instead of working the clutch. Then again, I could be talking absolute bullocks!!!

replace the slave as well. it's normally recommended as apparently if the master goes, the slave won't be long behind. Worth a go for a couple of quid they cost.

Contact where you got the master from too, you never know if could be a dodgy batch

well the slave cylinder was replaced at same time as first failed master,
I believe the fluid is dot 4 but will have to confirm that.
My mechanic said he will replace it again under warranty but this will be the 4th time so it has to be something else thats causing it to fail.
Could it be a bad installation

It's sounds like the master cylinder at rest is not in the fully extended position.

There is a small gulley in the cylinder that lets the fluid prime each time the pedal is lifted.

I think this part of the movement is not being reached.

Pop the cover off under the bonnet and make sure there is some free play at the top of the pedal travel to ensure the piston is fully out.

Had the same problem, I even changed the whole clutch pedal assembly.
In the end I think what was happening was the mechanic had the pedal itself set to high/tight so when I pushed the clutch to the floor it over extended and I ended up destroying the seal on the master cylinder.
The last one tht we installed I left about 2" on the pedal before it actually ingages. That was almost a year ago and so far no leaks.
