Hi All,

I'm pretty new to the LR scene - I've just been handed down a 1974 SWB saffari, which has been in family from new. Its done 52K road miles and was wax oiled straight after been delivered. So from what I can see its in pretty good condition.

it has completed about 70 miles in the last 5 years and after getting her MOTED and Taxed, it has become very clear all is not well with transmission:

There is really bad judder in first and second gears, i.e. banging as it the clutch is nearly engaged.

What I 've noticed is if the engine speed is much higher than needed (big slipping) juddering doesn't happen but if you let clutch out at idle its really bad.

The clutch does not slip at all

I've jacked up engine and did not notice any slack on mounts and also got both hands on prop shaft and twisted it with no play.

Any help would be gratefully recieved as its spoiling the start of a long (but probably expensive relationship!).

Thanks Again

Max

i know its a stupid question, but did you check both prop shafts?

mine was doing something like that 2 years ago (i was new to the whole game didn't know what to look for) and one of my propshafts worked it's way off, had to remove it at the side of the road and use the fronts to drag me home

Not sure about your description. However, sure your hand break is not stuck on such that at low speeds you get a judder like your going to stall. Just a thought, happened to me

i had the opposite, pinion seal had gone and the hand break drum filled up with oil so made no difference wether hand break was on or off.

It's not so much a knackered clutch as, what knackered the clutch in the first place...these things are NOTORIOUS for leaking rear main seals...eventually the oil gets to the pressure plate and clutch disc...its the "gummy" sticky half burned oil glaze on your clutch disc that you can blame...a bone dry fresh clutch disc will never do that. I replaced my clutch and pressure plate a few months ago...clutched and shifted like it had baby powder on it...a dream...well the dream ended two weeks later after the rear main seal had its way.

So worst case how difficult is a rear main seal to replace?
