Well...I've had a terrible day:(
Bits came late morning so I cracked straight on with it.
New valeo friction plate and thrust bearing installed, used an old input shaft for enlignment , everything lovely and clean but will the box go back in? No chance:mad:
Been at it around 3 hrs until it got too dark to see so I've had to give up for now:(.
Tried all the little tricks but it just won't go the last 30 or 40mm to get at least the nuts started on the studs, even gap between box and adaptor plate, turned engine a bit, jiggled engine and box in every position possible but, no, she won't have it.
Starting to think the plate is the wrong way round but I was 100% sure when I did it or the thrust is wrong, dunno...
I love my tratter but the bastard needs to send abit back my way:mad:.
what is it 300 tdi cos if plates in wrong way you cant but notice as the spring hub doesnt sit in the flywheel

Just a thought, Is the friction plate spline the same as your gearbox spline, remove the plate and try it on the gearbox spline before refitting.

Disco 200 in a 110 with lt77.
No marks to indicate which way round to fit and it looks different to the knacked one in that there was a little more protrusion on the centre splined hub on the flywheel side. If I tried the plate the other way the friction linings were held away from the flywheel, flipped it round and the lining touched so that's how I installed it.

same as the 300 then, plates in correct way if it fitted ok.have you got a jack supporting the engine

can you feel input shaft starting in the splines
Ermm...don't know really- sorry.
I've tried turning the output (propshaft) flanges and there is no resistance but I'm not sure there would be?
I've had the engine out a couple of times and replaced the box once before and never had any real issues. It's all clear around the box and nowt is catching.
Only thing that's changed is plate and thrust.
Is it possible that valeo plate is incompatible with AP cover?
I can't see it but clutching  at straws:D

It stops at around 25mm gap at bellhousing, what's at play at that distance? Start of plate spline?
put t/box in diff lock g/box in 4th and rotate the front output flange as you try once you cant turn it splines are engaged then its trying to enter spigot, check spigot bush , box has to slide up flush never pull it up with nuts/bolts, as long as plate splines arent poorly made it doesnt matter on make or mixing makes, slave cylinder rod is poking out its hole i presume

Yes, rod is poking out loads .
I've used an old input shaft to enlign, goes in lovely.
Yes, I would never force it in using the bolts, a sure fire way to rag the crank bush.

It's in!:):):):)
Turned out yesterday's struggles had slightly (very slightly) burred the start of the clutch plate splines:rolleyes:, the scrap main shaft would still go through but it was tight and bindy so I dressed it up and in she slipped:D.
Just put a couple of nuts on the bell housing and fitted the two mounts by torchlight so I could get the crane out and shut the door.
It's all easy stuff but lots of it from here on but forecast is for rain most of tomorrow so don't know how much I'll get done.
Thanks a bunch for everyone's advice:)

Good job Flossie,Soon be back on the road now. You never know with this job how it will go.
I was once replacing my engine with tractor and loader and was just lowering it into position when my mate urgently shouted stop. I asked what was wrong ? Nothing he said, It's gone in.

Another quicky.
I removed the rear prop completely and placed it in such a way that I'd know how it went back on .
The Doris moved it cos it was "in her way"
And now doesn't recall if she turned it round or not .
I think it's slidey end nearest the box?
