What does the clutch damper actually do???

I have a leak on my clutch, the top end is dry so i'm guessing the slave cylinder, but it also appears there is fluid of some sort on the damper - do these ever fail???

Is it best to replace or remove it??

if its on there you need it is the way i look at it, dont know much about dampers but if oil moves through it it will ware.

I'm having trouble with clutch judder which I cant pin down to anything in particular.
Could it be the damper that has failed ??

usually worn or contaminated (oil / water) cause of judder presuming were talkin 300 tdi dave?

Yes 300tdi.

The damper is a little round (about 50mm) metal object bolted next to the clutch slave cylinder. The fluid passes through it before reaching the slave.

cant picture this at all!

Yeah, i was just wondering what they do, why dont petrol ones have it and can they fail???
