I have fitted a new clutch kit to my 2.25 petrol series 2a. After fitting the clutch I experienced a loud whine from the gearbox everytime I put my foot on the clutch. I thought that might be clutch release bearing although it never made any noise before. I took out the box again and fitted a new bearing, the one that came out looked good but replaced it with the new one anyway. I also took the clutch off and refitted it just to check I have put everything on correctly the first time.

I made sure the clutch slave cylinder was adjusted as per the Haynes manual and with all that done the noise continued. I changed the oil in both boxes again with more new oil just incase. The noise is still there and I am wondering what my next step should be. I was thinking that I should refit the old clutch to rule out a faulty new one.

I cant really think what else to do from here?

Thanks for your help.

Its a series 2 box with the housing for the release bearing but not sure if that makes it all syncromesh. I think its the moment my foot touches the clutch but I might be wrong as I was just concerned with the noise being there rather than when it started.

it could be spigot bush ,it will only be noisy with pedal a half ish down and should go quiet with pedal fully depressed,i was trying to ascertain whether it was release bearing on plastic boss or the one in aluminum housing

One thing I did notice was the circular bit near the speedo cable was spinning. I dont know what that bit is but it is the size of a 2p and has a slot down its side. It just slowly rotates and I wondered if this should be doing that or be held in place?

ok just wanted to ensure you hadn't made that mistake

it sounds like your bearing and or the sleeve bush may be tired, unfortunately those both fit in the cover inside the front of the bellhousing :( which is a gearbox out job to sort

the bearing is expensive (ish) and the sleeve may be NLA unless someone knows where to get them from

edit
only the very last 2a boxes were fully synchro

thats intermediate gear shaft it should be held by a square plate over stud poking out above it and in slot in shaft ,chamfered part is lied up with speedo ,it will wear case and bugger transfer box if left as is

Thanks for your responses. I better get that gear shaft held in place then! I take it the bearing NiteMare is refering to is the clutch release bearing which I have done. I take it I cant really lubricate the sleeve where it meets the pressure plate as any lubricant on the friction plate is not good?

shouldnt need any

i'll elaborate on this...

the piece that presses on the pressure plate boss (or fingers) is carried in the bearing in the housing, the bearing slides forwards carrying that piece forwards and allows it to rotate with the pressure plate...

the bearing is lubricated from within the gearbox

this is a far superior bearing/clutch release system than the one used in the later Series3/disco/90 etc' and really only fails due to poor maintenance of the gearbox/mega mileage or regular swamping without the wading plug fitted

i've just changed my third or fourth Series3 clutch release bearing in the four years i've been playing with landrovers, each time i've needed to replace them is due to them drying out and siezing up, this then allows them to spin on the carrier almost silently and melt the carrier almost without warning
