i've got a clunking noise
it happens when i'm accelerating and then take my foot off the accelerator it sounds like it is coming from the middle rear of the landy
help plse i'm new to landrovers
many thanks

check yer uj's on yer prop, grab hold of the yoke with one hand and the prop with the other. now try and twist them, any movment and yule have to replace

You will need to chock the wheels, leave the hanbrake off and out of gear to feel play in the ujs.
Oh, and while you're under there, check the big ball joint on top of the bellhousing on the back axle by using a crow bar.

It could also be how you’re driving it, if you give it full throttle from no throttle, or full to a small amount of throttle it will clunk as the drive forces change.

If you rolling down a hill with no throttle then the wheels are driving the props, driving the transmission pushing the engine, so by accelerating hardish, you are then changing this rapidly so the engine is driving, at the same time taking up any play on the drive gear.

A Land Rover is a Land Rover, gear changes, accelerating etc... needs to be done smoothly and carefully, I know it sounds ridiculous, but they require a delicate touch. This will also give you a good life on running comonents, expecially the gearbox.

You could have exessive play, in a join or somthing, but also, being new to landys you may not have adopted that "landy driving skill".

Hello ned!
If its a tinny clunk! probly be yer UJ's .
If its a deeper Donk! most likely yer rear axle ball joint.
But then again, Wot would i know I aint heard any clunks since i bought me Hippo!

these are never ending.

so careful driving will reduce these clonks. ok, usually it's the rear that's pushing the vehicle when you back off the gas. i have this problem but without harsh acceleration and deceleration, it's smooth as silk.

thanks to one and all for theadvice
it was the UJ's the front uj on the front prop was WELL WELL gone the cap(?) on one of the four ends had worn and cracked it also wore a piece in the yoke!! the rear uj on the rear prop had slight play so changed it anyway nice shiny uj's with grease nipples in place and clunking gone drives blimming marvellous
so once again many thanks
