clunking noise

A few weeks ago sometimes there was a clunking noise when I was changing gears, it always did it in reverse but not all the time going forwards, the garage has said it is the 'uj' on the propshaft, they have quoted £300 to fix it, is this about the going price, hes not a main dealer but he is a landrover specialist,

Could be the uj on the prop but you have to check this by process of ellimination. Check if there excessive movement on each of the uj. One in front of the VCU and one behind it.

Downpipe fexi joint can also be defective causing exhaust to hit against the front subframe/sump splash guard. This only happens when the engine is cold and changing up the gears. Again try to check these before committing yourself to the 'word' of the garage,.

If he's a specialist then I'm sure he knows his stuff. But my local specialist charged me £47 for an hours diagnostics and didnt find worn engine mounts. So maybe a 2nd opinion is worth a go?

Does your yellow pages list a local propshaft specialists? Might be worth a try?

Does it clunk when you pull away? Isn't this typical of a failing rear diff mount?

uj's rarely fail on freelanders, check the diff mounts and if its a td4, check the drivers side engine mount as follows.......... remove the undertray, remove the ally engine bracket and jack the engine up then see if the rubber mount is tight in the chassis, normally they are only hand tight and clunk like mad

We've just changes the UJs on the rear propshaft, well worn. List price of £37.62, Christian Autos in Bristol gave us a pair for £25. We took the rear propshaft off and drove it in 2wd for a week whilst we swapped the UJs.

Also changed the three rear differential mounts. Only the "front" rear diff mount was worn but it was close to disintergrating. This job really needs a garage lift to do easily. Took us an hour or two.

It is well worth checking out the play in the whole transmission. Due to the play in the rear diff mounts, the rear propshaft UJs were knackered and the rear UJ was grinding into the fuel tank!

Well, I had be hearing a "transmission clunk" for a while so I knew something was wearing. However, as most of the offending articles are concealed by a huge bash plate, it's not something we could do an easy visual inspection of. I decided to use the same technique I used on my Series III. If there was a noise I couldn't easily trace, I just kept running it until the offending article broke.

The clunk disapeared only to be replaced by a nasty grating spring noise, which could only be heard from outside the vehicle. By the time we took the plate off, the rear propshaft had ground through a good few mm of the fuel tank.

The rear diff bush had virtually disintergrated. On most Freelanders this can be inspected fairly easily so I wouldn't expect many people to have this problem!

The rear diff mount has been replaced recently, also it isnt the uj thats at fault, it is the cv joint according to the mechanic. He said it is better to get a reconditioned unit, so I take his advice, after waiting for over 2 weeks I phone a few places to get a price on a cv joint, the dearest is £58. I tell the mechanic who says that is a front cv joint you need a rear cv joint,(rear cv joint from ird to rear prop) but nobody else has heard of a rear cv joint, has anyone on here heard of one?

The Freelander has four outer CV joints. One at each corner.

IIRC, the outer CV joints are all the same part number. Try a Google serach on "Freelander CV joint".

Simple thing I know - but worth checking the "U" washers are in place on the main prop. If these fall out it makes lots of play and you get "clunk" or more like "crack-ting" when going from reverse to 1st ot vice versa as the joints move on the splines.

I did a search for the cv joints, a promising one is cv joint driveshaft, according to the mechanic its got to be the one that drives the rear wheels,
the parts people say that they are all the same, lost now.
