can i just ask whether it was only as you changed gear that you had this 'clunk'? I'm trying to locate a clunk from the back-end of mine, does it if im not gentle with the clutch but also as im driving over reasonably uneven surfaces, then it sounds like something is knocking against the bodywork but i just cant find it. All the props, uj's etc seem fine as does the A-bar ball joint, but im tempted to change things one at a time starting with that....

Sounds very similar to a problem I had about 12 months ago, but only recently sorted.
Same mysterious clunking, went down the same route changing ball joints and bushes right left and centre, I even whipped the self levelling unit off after suspecting that ( which still needs refitting )
After hanging off it in the pit one day and bouncing up and down the sound seemed to emanate from the right rear shocker.
Upshot whip them both off test them manually to be sure and replace them both, half hour job relatively cheap, and could save you months of head scratching.
