Hi guys,

I have a Defender 1993 90, 200tdi from a disco,

I've previously written a thread about my problem with a clunk. We think it could be the transfer box.

I'm going to swap it out, but unsure what to replace it with.

My transfer serial number is
28d280979e with a 1.222 ratio.

If I bought this box from EBay, would it fit? Think it's a petrol though and mines a Deisel...

Thanks for reading! :)

theres no difference between petrol or diesel ,you could use a v8 or a 300 tdi but youd need to drill 2 m8 holes to secure hand brake cable bracket

Am I right in thinking a v8 defender box is 1.2 otherwise you need a disco one for 1.2 ratio the rest of defender boxes are 1.4 or higher aren't they? You can swap the drums, fit a disco handbreak or modify the disco handbreak to take a defender cable though. I was lucky and mine used to be a v8 so didn't need a new box for decent ratio

only some most are 1.4

So I bought and fitted a new transfer box. The old transfer centre diff had failed on inspection.

New problem, it whines and sounds like it's in reverse. I filled it with 2L of EP90 Castrol Classic (green tin) as the box was a B reg. I filled it until it poured out, but I thought they held a little more than 2L?

Any thoughts on my problem, still have a 'normal clunk' now:

Thanks in advance

Fill then drive then fill. Is quite warm today so might be bit expanded. Should settle better aswell though
Could be the handbreak drum. My disco one caught the pad when I changed once made a similar whirr to reverse
And I think it's 2.7L? Might be wrong was long time ago
My disco started some annoying squeekey this morning
It's also started abit more of a clunk think the uj's need swapping. They all clunk alittle quite abit of play in them
Also did you check new box before fitting? Could have had abit of hammer
