Hi all,

I have a clunk sound every now and then from the rear. Sometimes (but not often) it'll happen when I am cornering but most commonly it occurs when it is changing down through the gears (auto).

I can only describe it as a single "clunk" sound from the centre rear of the freebie. I have had a look underneath and prodded (and pushed) most bits including the exhaust but I can't seem to replicate it. I saw a thread mentioning a rear diff bush but despite searching the forum, I don't seem to have been able to yield any results.

The prop has also been removed so I can rule that out.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

there are 3 mount on your rear diff commonly the center one goes this could be the cause of you clunk i had the same thing last year

Thanks for your response - Do you know if there's a way that I should be able to tell by having a look underneath?

yes get under it and look at your rear diff you will see the rubber mounts thay may look worn or not get a bar and see if you have alot of play.
normally the front one that goes

There are three u/j's on your prop shaft , grasp each on either side and try and twist if you feel any movement or play change it or 'em.....
I did the rearmost two weeks ago due to exact symptoms.

There should be a thanks or rep button on this forum. There are lots of guys giving good advice. Rather than make a post to thank every reply, a click of the button. But 'thanks' steely dan and rhodie

I had a clunk when changing gear on my automatic. Exhaust box banging on badly designed towbar. Just a thought...

I have the same problem with a clunk but I have the 2002 ES Automatic. However it only happens when the box changes from 3 to 4th and at low revs. At high revs the automatic change is quite smooth. I have been told that it could be the solenoid sensor!!!
