Clunk clunk clunk!!!!

Does any one know why when accelerating from 1s to 2nd I get a clunk when changing gear. Sounds like from the rear, poss diff related is this normal? Have heard if changing the centre mount might releive the problem as this gets overlooked on services and is prone to wearing quicker than the other two??

diff mounts
cracked chassis
broken subframe mount.

The centre mount on the front of rear diff is a fairly common problem area. If you can get under have a good push/pull up and down if rubber gone diff will try and rotate. Changed mine today took about 20 mins. Cost me about £15 from dealer you can get cheaper on line if you want to wait for delivery.

will try a new mount after testing the mount first. You don't think it could be anything to do with VCU or IRD starting to go?

possibly - but check those first.

Agreed, more likely the diff mounts. Its the problem an't it. As soon as a Freelander steps out of line the IRD/VC gets blamed.

just had the tracking done!!!! and not as many clunks as before can accelerate hard again yay!!! my mate in the local garage has said he will take the VCU and props off for the summer to conserve wear and tear and fuel what do you think, he says it will handle better but it won't be a real 4x4 then!!!! thinking not! i bought it because it was 4x4 if i wanted to keep a 2wd would have stuck with french crap.

Tried mondo mode on mine..... Nah!!

Doesn't sound like the tracking was the problem. More likely its adjusted the power distribution to be more to the front wheels. Still need to find the real reason me thinks.

Still clunking, though? Get those diff mounts checked...

It will handle worse, because it will be only 2wd. When I had to do it whilst I was waiting for a part, the vehicle had a tendency to spin the front wheels, and was really horrid.

You will need to inform your insurance company as you are modifying the vehicle.

Thanks Blippie, have decided against it, am going to do the mounts in next couple of weeks when get a garage with a pit to make it a bit easier.

If "clunk" is only apparent when accelerating it will probably be the front mount on rear diff. This will normally happen in all gears though (does get worse with time)

Normal cause of noise from rear end 1st - 2nd only is rear chassis mounting .... will normally be more noticable when turning and accelerating from stand still.

The reason the clunk is more severe in the lower gears is that the torque is higher. ( Directly proportional to the overal gear ratio between the engine and the prop shaft).

Hi guys, got the same problem with clunking in my freelander. After reading this thread I have just been outside and had a tug on my propshaft (!) and the front mount is totally shot. After reading one of the previous posts where someone managed to change it in about 20 mins, I decided to have a go. Undone the three bolts easily enough and mount is now loose, but how the hell do you get it out past the diff and a new one back in?!! Help!!!

Try loosening other two mounts , you should then be able to move everything arround enough to change centre mount

Thanks, I ended up loosening the four bolts which hold the subframe up. Gave me enough room to wriggle it out in the end. Will pick up a new one from the main stealer tomorrow, hopefully it will go back in as easily! I've put up with that clunking noise for about 6 months now, if I'd known it would be such a simple job I would have done it long ago!!

When i did my front bush i simply carefully bent the side bracket a little to allow old bush out new bush back in it now drives like a different car well worth doing
