i'v had a good search around on other freds about various clunkin, clickin, rattlin noises that our precious landy's acquire, 'oweva i thought my problem may b a lil different than others posted.

so 'ear it goes.

my 300tdi 90 i think has always made bit of a clunk when lettin off clutch abit too quick, and has made th occasional clickin or clunkin noise when drivin.

but now it seems more regular.
i've tried narrowin it down to the front axel, as it almost feels like its somewhere under me feet.
this loud clickin/clunkin noise occurs mostly when goin over ruff tarmac, ya no shallow pot holes, uneven road surface, raised manholes etc etc. also happens when straightenin up from a medium long bend, like from comin off from goin round a roundabout.

i dont know what to look for to b honest, but would like some ideas to go to th garage with when I try n get it sorted.

any clues, or similar experiences out there?come on landy owners!!:D

as always, check yer UJs first

would i nt b gettin vibration if it was that?i had me rear uj go and twas vibratin like a loon before it popped off?or is vibration a symtom of when its got worse?

get under the motor and give em bit of a shake if theres any movement you need to sort em otherwise it just gets worse and then the noise happens, eventually leading to em popping apart

It's your A-frame ball joint. sounds like the front, but it's actually from the back. it's like a knocking sound only heard once when you go over a bump in gear or when you try to reverse up hill after a long forawrd run.

ahhh yeah that sounds like it could be it, any ideas if thats an expensive repair?can i see this a frame ball from under th landy?i like to know what i'm talkin bout when i'm askin for it to b fixed!

check your shock absorber bushes - mine click and clonks just as yours describes, its because the top bush on my nearside front shick is worn allowing it to flop around a touch. Should be easy to fix, if they ar't too rusted.

could any movement whatsover (ie ~ 1mm) lead to this. I occasionally get a loud clunk on changing gear quickly and some vibration/low grinding noise when taking the foot off the pedal over 40, even on normal roads.

3 of the uj's are rock solid although I have now spotted some weeping at the rear hub

nuther thing ta check....grap the flange that the prop shaft is bolted to on yer x-fer box n give it a shake about....shud be no movement there too....normally if yer uj's are going an have been left too long it screws up yer bearings in the x-fer box

get it changed, thats classic signs, especialy the noise when you lift off the power. they are easy to change if you remove the prop shaft, but buy new prop shaft bolts, they are 20p each from paddocks. a good vice and a socket set are good to remove the UJ, use the sockets off required sizes as drifts etc to push the old one out and the new one in - take care not to trap a roller between the end of the spider and the cup, this will be obvious if the shell doesn't slide on easily.

ears a update on th clunk n clickin goin on in me defender.been in't mechanics for a few days (since tues), and they cant really find where this noise is a comin from. I'm guessin they've checked all th obvious, uj's propshaft, springs and ball joints. Now are lowerin the sump?i aint got a scooby what a sump is/does and how it could be relavent. any quick explanations or ideas as to what they could be lookin for?
i'l keep everyone who gives a hoot updated.

The sump is the bottom of your engine where all the oil sits when it isn't been thrown around the engine. It's also how you get to your crankshaft if your engine throws a hissyfit and blows up. Why they would want to take the sump off is beyond me??? Sounds like they're about to stiff you big style. Get someone who does know what a sump is down to the garage pronto. and find out what they're playing at??

And what if they haven't????

ah, dont reckon he's gonna stiff me. had th mechanic for yonks, never been screwed, always had good rates and honest work. so I can cross that orf for starters.

maybe to access somethin like I think ol redhand may ave suggested.

We'l see.

cheers for concerns

I cant see why it should be anything engine related if it clunks when cornering or declutching quickly, thats much more likely transmission... You might want to ask them why they are taking the sump off as I think they are looking in much the wrong places, and may well be looking for stuff to charge you for.

cheers for th reponce.
i dont believe i'm in th process of bein rinsed (we'l c wen i get th bill!)
i may MAY hav been illinformed 'oweva cus twas me misses who told me it was th sump bein lowered. she may av misurd. i'ma go c monday and c wats WAT.any more ideas welcome.
