Hi Guys! What should I be paying for a sensible condition, 6 month+ MOT, 1993-ish Classic (or preferably LSE) with LPG conversion, on e-bay? Just a rough figure, i'm thinking £800 for a classic and £1000-£1200 for a LSE? Am I better buying a soft dash model? Thanks in advance for your help!

hiya i dont really want to pee on your firework :) but i dont think you`ll get much for that kind of money , the old saying you only get what you pay for spring to mind , also on ebay although there are some bargains to be had , there are more dogs trying to be moved on , i personally feel that the soft dash model is a far more civilised car ( i own one myself ) on lpg and its a grand motor :) a much better drive i think than earlier classics the down side is that theres a bit more in the way of electrical problems , mines been ok though i am glad to say .
i think that if your looking for an half decent lse soft dash with lpg be prepared to pay 2k plus , although i know some will definately disagree :) :) the hard dash models do seem to sell a lot cheaper though , anyway welcome to the site and best of luck in your quest mate .

As far as classics go I saw a 89rr tdi on hbc auto salvage that was cat c but £400, it only wanted a tailgate. It all depends on what condition you want it to be. I bought a 93rr vogue se with a fat folder of history totaling about 9 grand, a1 bodywork, new tailgate and 85k for £875. If you are set on one with lpg you can get one for a grand but it may run loppy and may have been installed badly - if you do view an lpg rr obviously make sure you check it running cold and hot, a friend of mine had a big bill with one that had a cheepo friend of a friend instalation.

I agree with Rick....

It's all very well looking at bottom end prices, but these are big machines, that can easily present you with a repair bill that is bigger than they cost to purchase.

Choose very carefully - there's lots out there.

If you can't tell a good one from a bad one - then don't buy one...

Typically, I'd avoid air suspension - it has a habit of being expensive to fix...

Remember that all the 3.9 litre and larger v8's have the old liner issues - the only way to fix this is to have a top hat linered block - even the new 4.6 blocks have this problem unless top hatted...

It's easy to see one for £3500, and say that it's overpriced, but it's very easy to buy a £1000 "bargain", and have the engine go - this is a minimum of £1000 to fix if you buy a secondhand engine.... And these things can't half take a lot of man hours to fix...

I have found that the good ones sell very very quickly. If it's been for sale for over a week - there's usually something wrong with it.....

So you have the dilemma of good ones selling quickly, and the fact that you need to choose carefully.

Find the best condition one you can find - get it checked out by a mechanic who knows rangies well.

Choose the model you want - LSE's are nice, but i didn't need the extra space - so went for a hard dash Vogue SE.....

Find the nicest condition , least molested and best serviced one you can. Take it for a long test drive - make sure you see it start from cold (and all the usual test drive checks....).

Look down the oil filler neck - if it's nice and honey couloured than fine.
Brown - not so good - but OK. Black - bad. Black and gunky - Very Bad..

Classic Diesels are a good bet though - go for the 200 or 300 tdi - the are better than the VM diesel...

Happy hunting...

Hi I have just bought a soft dash M reg 300tdi on factory fitted coils and its set me back £2900 i have spent £800 on it and it still needs a rear crossmember when I can afford it.But having said that it is a more refined motor and a little nippier than my 1990 3.9 V8 which is on LPG but not in as good condition and I only payed £1600 for the V8.I do think that I payed over the odds for the TDi but it was everything I wanted and the interior is mint, the body has a few surface scratches but nothing really bad.I think if you spent around 2000 you would get a decent classic either deisel or petrol.

hi mate i only bought the p38 yesterday for very little money , the car is fantastic but, it had major overheating problems fortunately the guy i got it from was sensible and did `nt run it in the red , i collected it and drove 20 odd miles home in it and stopped twice to top up the header tank , this evening i had a look , did a test with a special liquid to check for the presence of combustion gases in the cooling system and , it was negative :D on closer inspection i found the bleed hose from the top of the radiator to the expansion tank to be blocked solid ( the blockage being in the nipple on the expansion tank , i cleaned it out and filled it up with water , this time it took a much larger amount to fill it left it running outside the house for an hour , no problem , then went for a road test up every big hill in the area and not even a hint of over heating now :D :D :D i hope iam as lucky with the bloody lottery tonight :D

Thats great news, its good to hear something like that instead of being sold a car "in mint condition" for it to boil on the way home and cost loads to fix.I hope you have happy times with it because if Driving was just about getting from Ato B cheaply and with no intrest of what you drive we would all drive those horrible little hatchbacks that cut me up as I drive my Rangie.

I have owned my land rover for a year, it is a 1993 range rover classic lse, the engine has been ungraded to a 4.6 block (i presume from a p38), it still has a 4.2 head. It needs a new alternator, should i be buying an alternator fit for the original car, or should i be getting one designed for a p38.

Also i am thinking of selling it, it is quite tatty, original bull bars with spots, mud terrains (covered 300 mls), converted to coils 500mls ago, electric seats and radio broken, new front wheel bearings, new fuel pump, chassis solid, rusted top tailgate and rust boot pan, one owner till a year ago (a friend of mine). All paper work. 12months Mot. And i was just wondering if anyone had any idea the sort of money i could get for it..??

I've just bought a 94 lse with gas, 12 months MOT , brought it home on Sunday. All I'll say is 1000 won't get you much or you'll spend plenty on it (you might anyway).
One went through ebay last week for 1900 and one from PH went for 2650 (no gas). The latter was a nice car, can't comment on the first but it looked ok.
Getting used to the correct driving attitude for these beasts!

ETA just spotted this thread started 3 years ago!!
