Happy Bunny!

Been casually looking for a Series Landy for a few months now, but now the summer is over I've started having a little more time to look properly. The search was on for a diesel engined Series as I was informed that having a diesel would make the planned 200TDi transplant much easier.

A few came and went, even a barn find 1960 Series 2 with gearbox powered winch went for more than I could stomach at the time.

I had been waffling over all the V8's that had turned up, writing them off for being too thirsty, or unreliable, but of all people, it' was my Dad who actually convinced me.

"If you're going to get a Land Rover, you may as well do it properly!"

Unfortunately, at the time, there was a V8 Series 2a on the bay of evil all but 20miles away from me. A quick phone call to arrange a viewing, and a couple of conversations with a couple of 'in the know' mates to ask about reliability, mpg, and what to check for and I had my test drive.

After that, it all happened rather quickly! My god is it good fun.

I collected today and haven't stopped grinning since!

The Spitfire sticker on the back door has a cool story to it too...

_DSC2558.jpg by Diabolu80, on Flickr

The pilot with the call sign JEJ went to the same school as the previous owner. He was one of the only pilots in WW2 to have his call sign as his initials as he was a bit of a spiffing pilot at the time.

But he got himself expelled from his boys school for...

... inviting 14 girls to the school swimming pool at night and, well, lets just say having a good time. :) Brilliant! That is without doubt staying on! Maybe even going down the rear quarter!

Plans? Well, a little tidy up of some of the body panels (there's a couple of very very small crusty bits... and only a couple), sort out a thinner, and therefore lower and further back seating position, make a rear tonneau for the back so I can a little more safely store my tennis balls in there when going to work and after that...

... There will be a military theme as I'd really like to have a small tribute to the guys out there in some way, and this seems like a very good opportunity. Plus I'm never going to have another chance to go military on anything and feel comfortable doing it (I wouldn't do a military polo for instance)

Other than that, I'd love to know what to check over, keep an eye on and some tidy mods to do which will improve it mechanically etc.

I've read that Range Rover diffs make a big difference to the gearing, and seeing as I'm only using 3rd and 4th at the moment as it's got plenty of power for that, the diffs can only be a good thing. I believe this year is 12 spline diffs? And imagine they're straight forward to swap over.

Also looking for a Fairey Overdrive to help the cruising revs.

Fuel cut off and a battery cut off switch, and some series 2 'inside' headlights.

:)

Keep your eyes peeled, and feel free to Inspire :cool:

Chris

And yes, I know I've been crAp and not posted piccies of the V8.. I shall do tomorrow!

rangie diffs will make it nicely usable round town but be very careful in third gear in the 30mph zones as it'll be really easy to get caught speeding :eek:

overdrive will make it nice on the motorway and improve economy on those distance runs, it should just purr along at 65mph :D

my 88 and 109 are both TDI'd with rangie/disco diffs, i found it pointless trying to drive them with the original ratios

That is a bonnie looking machine.

A disco axle will have stronger half shafts for the V8 monster.

disco axles are not needed, my 88 has been on the road for at least three years (i think it might be four) and i've not bust a halfshaft yet

folks need to understand where the pressure/stress is placed when building these motors, just a 3.54 diff helps to protect the halfshafts

unfortunately this moves the pressure forwards in the drivetrain, you need to learn to drive with a little sympathy and look after the oils in the gearbox/transfer box

Rangie diffs are stronger than standard series but are still 10 spline so the shafts are still the weak point. If its used just on the road and driven correctly you shouldn't have a problem,it's a lot of work to fit disco axles (I fitted them to my 2a) and they are more up for the job but then the weak point is the gearbox as I found out earlier this year when I snapped the layshaft in the gearbox clean in two! :(

Moar pics you say???

Oh, ok then!

SCENE!... they're bloomin' everywhere aren't they lol

Nearside bulkhead has been trimmed... Downside to massive V8's I guess.

Remote oil filter goodness.

Yes, that's a bright blue anodised shovel... that's being replaced.

The Underside is caked... but all solid!

I think I've hopefully sorted out some 3.54 ratio diffs from a friend on RetroRides (there's a thread up there too) and also maybe a 'Bearmach Toro' Overdrive???

Meatier than a fairey apparently. Anyone know anything about these?

My thoughts are I'm currently only using 3rd and 4th as the V8 seems to have plenty of torque at tick over to pull off in 3rd, so if I can raise the gearing at the top end so I'm cruising at 60 at a little over tick over, then mpg, wear etc will be improved... win win? Yes?

That's my thoughts in my head at the moment anyway. And then still have enough down the low end for playtime.

I'm driving very carefully at the moment, but then I'm not one for blatting about doing clutch kicks and dumping at 4,000 revs anyway.

Thanks for all the compliments and comments guys! I'm thoroughly enjoying reading your suggestions!!

Chris!!!! :cool:

I've gone both 3.54 diffs (standard in disco axles) and an overdrive because with the higher ratio theres a big difference from 3rd to 4th gear so it's nice to have the overdrive to pop in when it's in 3rd gear as sometimes 4th is too high (long hills etc) ;)

Wouldn't do diffs. Don't fancy speedo under reading by 20% odd and reduced handbrake efficiency.
Overdrive (rocky mountain supposed to be good) or high ratio transfer every time.

i have no problems with my handbrake holding my 109 with 3.54 diffs and about 750-1000kilo of trailer and load (combined) behind it on steep hills, i usually just leave it in 1st gear as a backup precaution as well when towing the trailer, fully loaded it's just about 3tons

7.50 tyres and 3.54 diffs make my speedo in my 88 under read by near as dammit 30% which is real easy maths

15 = 20 mph
22 = 30 mph
30 = 40 mhp
35 = under 50 mph (M6 restriction zone)
45 = 60 mph
60 = 80 mph

etcetera etcetera

all the above calculations keep me safe from the scameras :D and i use the same calc's in my 109, i've been running like this for nigh on four years now without any problems

Low range sucks with 3.54 and your hand brake becomes rubbish. Stick with the over drive first and see how you go.

Well... current news is...

I picked up a pair of 3.54 diffs for £5, so it looks like I'll definitely be having those diffs on. Wanting to try to get them on before I drive over to Norwich at the end of the month, so collection and fitting is going to become a priority over the next few days. Hopefully that will go smoothly.

Also managed to get over to Anchor Supplies, an army store over in Ripley very near me and picked up an army jerry can with cage, and small ammo crate to hopefully use as a bit of a glove box and an army tool roll. Going to get a small set of tools to collect and keep in the landy somewhere.

More info to come over the week as I start getting some more bits done on it!

I did manage to clean out a field from the underside, and I'll throw some more underseal on the chassis in preparation for winter.

Thank you so much for all your help so far! :)

Chris
