Went out today just to have a look at some lanes, Didn't try and drive any as i was on my own and car ain't ready yet, The one i found had a gate at the entrance which was not locked but it had this sign next to it. Do you think that it is saying the lane is not for cars are the area either side of the lane is not to be driven on?

:hijacked: Erm doing the same thing round my way and got a couple of questions me self.Is there any difference between a sign saying Byway and public byway? Also if a byway has the vehicle prohibited sign at one end but not the other does that mean its one way or the coucnil are lazy?Cheers

Get you're local OS map for that area and look for a line of green or red (depends on map scale) crosses. They are Boats or Byways open to all Traffic. and unless there is a TRO notice at the start and end of the lane. Then it is legal to drive it.

Is it a red circle with the flying motorcycle or an unsuitable for motorvehicles sign. If the latter that's just the council covering it'self against insurance claims. If the former then it's closed to all traffic.

Yeah is the prohibited sign not the unsuitable, although went past the end of the lane on me travels and fort oh theres a lane but checked me map n it was the one i saw earlier but the other end had the signs up.

Well if there's no sign and It's shown on the map as a road then there's nothing to stop you from driving it

Didnt risk it in the end cos driving past the sign just as old bill rocked up was inevitable.Might give it a wlak and see if its worth driving

That sign will be there because a lot of people think it's Ok to drive on Common Land.
IT ISN'T.
If it has a Right of Way across it, that is just like any other right of way.
