Well after owning a number of cars from sports to a Range Rover Classic I’ve decided that I can no longer go fast in this world of speed limits for fear of loosing my licence so I might as well leave the road all together! Now in the possession of a company car I’m looking for a bit of fun, hopefully in the form of a Land Rover. I was looking elsewhere initially due to a money pit of a Range Rover that I used to own, but I can't ignore my love for Land Rovers any more.

My question is: Can you buy a defender for under 2k (that won’t break every 5 minutes) or do you realistically have to spend more. Also if you don't want to spend more what are your options? Are series just plain too old unless you are an enthusiast and are Disco's just wrong?

Edith my £800 Ninety gave a year and a half of absolutely trouble free motoring. (ok I'm now rebuilding it now nut by bolt, but only cos I want her to last for ever)

Muddy my TD5 110 double cab, bought from new spent about 4 months in the dealers whilst in warranty, with my constant fighting all levels of Land Rover to have basic problems like a rusting bulkhead at 800 miles fixed. Still isn't fixed. They lie, lose paperwork, forget things, dealerships change hands and you get left behind.. etc etc.

Money means nothing apparently.

I'd buy a defender and when time permits learn to work on it yourself, and then when money and time permit, rebuild it. Only then can you be sure of a good un.
