cheap oil change

Hi,
I went to Halfords a few days ago to buy some oil to do an oil change, halfords own make £27 for 5litres or Edge 5W-30 £45 for 4litres, the td4 takes 6.8 litres, thought I would check online, found National tyres doing an oil change and filter using Edge 5W-30 for £31.50, this is an online price, took it along yesterday and had it done. joro
 
If they really do use Castrol Edge then that is a great price. I pay £27 / 4L at Costco for the same stuff.
I take it they didn't make an additional charge for removing the under-tray (it says on their site that they might) or did they suck it out?
 
I allready had the undertray removed, but it says they may charge £5 to £10 if they have to take of an undertray which is still a bargain, and yes it is Castrol Edge that they use.

hiya if you have a local ldv/daf dealers pop in oil(5litres is @£12), my ldv uses 7litres, and will use same oil for freelander nxt change.

Is it the correct spec?
There are plenty of places that sell cheap oil and indeed there are plenty of places that sell cheap oil that meets the spec for the TD4 but I have been using Castrol for years now and like it.

I was originally intending to use GTX Magnatec as I already use that in my Defender until I realised it was not correct for the TD4 so I got Castrol Edge instead.

I've had a Difflock Drainplug on my 90 since it was brand-new and really like it as it makes draining the oil a really clean job (well it would if I could find a way of removing the filter without spilling it!). Next time I change the oil on the TD4 (which will be in 5-months time as I intend doing it 6-monthly) I intend fitting one to that as well.
I will remove the undertray one more time and cut a small neat hole in the area of the sump-plug which will allow me to attach the adapter, then as it is screwed into place the oil will run through the hose and into the container without the need to remove the undertray or cover it with spilt oil.
When done it will make a quick job even quicker.

you should be using fully synthetic oil and I could not buy it anywhere for less than N/Tyres done the job for, Litch I allready have a hole cut in my undertray but as its lying in the garage at the moment (ok for the last 9 months) but I had thought about buying a difflock drainplug maybe the next time, what about one of those pumps that suck the oil out anyone got one?, that would solve the undertray problem.

There is a specific spec for the oil - not all are the same, and typically the LR spec is damn expensive.

I don't have the details to hand, but If I remember correctly the earlier TD4 takes a Peugot type spec, and the later takes a Ford type spec
 
Castrol Edge is the correct spec for a TD4, I pay £27/4L from Costco.

See the 'cheap TD4 oil-change' thread currently running and you will see that Joro has found that National Tyres do a cheap change using Castrol Edge.
 
the oil is castrol tech..15/40 fleet use oil, never had a prob with my diesel engines using it, albeit never put in freelander yet, but did use in a 300tdi disco i had..again no probs.
 
The 300 tdi Disco engine is a different kettle of fish to the German Engineered BMW TD4 Motor.

Modern engineering requires specific lubricants and fuels
otherise we'd still be boiling down sheep to lube them

Nicely put.
Manufacturers don't specify different oil specifications for no reason and if you intend getting a long life out of your engine then you should stick to what they say. Oil is one of the cheapest yet most important things in the vehicle so using the incorrect type just to save a few £ in the short term is not wise.
 
point taken lads!, i wasn't suggestin' a cheap oil,after all castrol as you know is a good oil and not cheap, was just sayin where you could get it from, never understood the numbers on the oils neither, so after what ya said i looked it up and take ya point bout the freelander engine,my van(ldv convoy,transit engine) has been round clock twice so oils doin' its job and good maintenance too, thanx for the hand slap i learnt summat;)
