Hi,
my insurance is up for renewal in the next couple of months. can anyone recommend a good but cheap insurance company that will cover landys that want to be landys & go off road as well as soft road? i heard NFU were good...

just switched to Aidrian Flux from Direct Line fully comp with 2 years ncd on a modded policy that covers green laning /off roading garaged and cat 2 fitted only £390 with agreed payout, saved me £240 on just a standard policy off D.L

Wow that's a hugely reduced rate! I'm with elephant at the moment & have 6yrs no claims & it still costs me £624pa for a policy that is non specic about off roading! Thanks for all the info guys I will give them both a call.

i'm with Adrian Flux still after a few years,
BUT did have to shop around this year to force them to lower their initial quote.

Personally, i am 100% sure that insurance is all a racket and the companies involved are all a bunch of cnuts. I mean how else can it be that so many companies are the same underneath the name (admiral/elephant/the other one i forget the name of) and that the 'price comparison' websites are owned by the the insurance companies (confused is Admirals one...)

Just do your best to get a low quote, shop around and you really will find them- i learned a lot after buying a second car earlier this year, and especially after i learned that you cant use your no claims bonus on a second car. well except you can, you just need to realise that 98% or so of insurance companies tell you you can't......... saved me over 700quid on insurance for a smart car. go figure. cnuts like i said.

How is it possible to use your no claims bonus on a second vehicle cause that is exactly what i was told?

Aidreen Flux took into account i have 2 other vehicles with +9 years ncd on them both but only 2 years on the Defender they asked me if i had other vehicles with more ncd on them as they have companies who will take it into account, and there ring back service is excellent, you fill in details online and they offer times for contacting you by phone and they are to the minute with there call back, im very pleased with the service and price:)

im with sureterm as well, covers green laning and events. got discount for being forum member as well.
paying £105 fully comp on 110 csw! bit there hand of at that price.

I'm with Lancaster; they were by far the cheapest I could find and I've had quite a few quotes done...
Classic Car Insurance Quote | Agreed Value | Lancaster Insurance

I got mine fully comp, includes greenlaning, breakdown cover and lots more. I've told them about all the modifications and they came up just over £500; which was around £80 cheaper than the next one (and £600 less than my Volvo I had before that)

NFU wouldnt insure me as I live in Birmingham:rolleyes:

I would suggest that you ring companies instead of using online quotes as you can negotiate and get more money off. Just tell them that you've got a cheaper quote somewhere else and ask them to match it; this usually works;)

I'm with Sureterm as well. Just renewed (for a third year). No problems with them (but then I haven't had to make a claim), and they are cheaper than the other companies I tried. Only slight downside is that they are VERY persistent when it comes to renewals -- you may get daily phonecalls (and the occasional text message) as the date approaches.

Definitely check other companies, and be prepared to haggle. Adrian Flux quoted me a higher price, but it was roughly the same as Sureterm's when the legal cover was added. On hearing this, Sureterm offered to add legal cover for nothing AND drop the premium! Now just under £150 for 110 CSW fully comp (3k limited mileage) -- that's with full NCD -- unfortunately I have to include 'commuting' as sometimes drive it to work (pushes up price).

For the record, these are the major policy differences that I noted down, although this is far from exhaustive...

  • Adrian Flux policy comes with free legal cover and covers off-roading (on official courses only?) as well as greenlaning; all modifications covered like-for-like; protected NCD included.
  • NFU has no compulsory excess; no 'limited mileage' policies -- they don't consider annual mileage nor vehicle value when assessing premium. Legal cover is included, and a basic breakdown assistance (and the cost for additional relay-type cover is VERY reasonable -- well worth considering this in place of your usual breakdown assistance, if more cost-effective). NFU different from other two as they are not brokers: underwrite their own policies.
  • Sureterm courtesy car is "a 4x4"; legal cover is (at least) £20 extra; policy covers greenlaning but not other off-roading. Limited mileage policies available. No 'grace' period: when policy expires, that's it, no cover - most policies I've had allow you a 14-day cushion in case you're late renewing.

NFU were more expensive than the other two, but I suspect that I'm not really in their target market. Not much to choose between the others: some of the Sureterm reps are a bit 'hard sell', whereas the Adrian Flux and NFU reps were a little more friendly. All three wanted a complete list of the modifications. Eventually came down to price.

Note -- Although I always compare online quotes for my Pug, and get substantial discounts as a result, I don't bother for my Defender: (i) it is usually difficult to find the correct model, but mainly (ii) they wouldn't provide any kind of off-road cover, and (iii) as soon as you tick the box 'is the car modified?' you'll be directed to ring them to give details.

Thanks Pete,
that is really useful to know! i have 2 months to sort it out so plenty of time to haggle ;)

If you have any mods (a snorkel will do) then I found Frank Pickles to be the cheapest for my 90....£158 fully comp

p.s includes windscreen, legal and greenlaning!
