hello all, I have a problem with my disco 2 rear chassi rotting, I know from searching that some people have replaced the chassis on the disco 2, and I have read a forume about some one thrying to aquire just the rear end over a year ago.
what I am wondering has any one replaced just the rear part of the chassis from the back axle were it curves. and if so were did you get you part from.
Is there a supplier manufaturing these parts like the defender or is it yust a death sentence for the discovery 2 which will be a shame:confused:

for anyone intrested i've been in touch with Ricgards chassis and they say they are working on a proto type chassis for the disco 2. It should lounched soon and will be published in landrover monthly hopefully in may. looking forward to reading this may be a life saver for the disco 2.
Don't know if this is going to include a part rear end chassis that can be welded on to the original chassis as a repair in stead of a complete over haule. :biggrin1:

that is the worry if the price is to high then its not worth it for the amount of work required to change one. I'm more intrested in a complete rear end that I could weld onto my original chassis litke what you can do on the defender.
At the moment I think richards are the only ones looking into this and at the right price they will be on a winner.
have to order mays issue of the mag

I hope they make a better job of it than the 90/110 rear members with the extentions that I have fitted - they are crap - no other way to describe them.

I have emailed another company last night to see if they are thinking of doing the same. some competition would be good. As for the quality well its got to be better than what ive got and if you galvanise it and look after it it should last a long time.

Has any one tried welding a complete rear chassis form another disco on to theres. I was wondering if this would be easyer as there is 2 around that i might be able to aquire

Update on my chassis, I’ve had a couple of welders have a look, one wants an open cheque account to do the job which I’m not happy with could be ripped off. The other won’t do it.
Has anyone replaced a major part of their chassis themselves. I was thinking of getting a Mig welder and making the section myself and welding it in. I would be either replacing the hole section from behind the rear spring to the back box running beside the fuel tank (the curved section), or I could make a sleeve to slide over the lower section which is cracked hoping the top part is good to weld to. Any ideas would be great.

mine has a crack the full length from the back axle to the rear box. the hole under side of the chassis has blown and i have a whole where the rear towbar bracked attaches. like you said i will have to remove the fuel tamk to sort it out. Hoping to make a box to go over the area and weld on. have to wait till ive lernt to weld:crazy:

Mines starting to show signs that the welders going to have to come out, I wax oiled back before winter but most has come off now, the chassie under the wax oil has gone rusty on the surface and the wax oil has just come of it. Next step I thought off painting/spraying old gear oil with a hint of black wax for colour, nothing ever rusts around a leaking transfer box!

that’s what my dad does with the old engine oil. Seems to work but the oil slick when driving is a road hazard also not very good when you want to work under the car as you get oil all over ever think. I think wax oil old chassis can cause more trouble as it hold the moisture in the metal. I'm going for red oxide primer and then painting black with normal car paint. this way I will see the rust developing and be able to get to sort it quickly before it eats a hole.
I’ve taken the towbar off today spent a couple of hours grinding and banging to get most of the bolts out. Still have the two bolts going through the chassis cant get these ones out. May have to grind the anchor points off and fit new ones. Will try and get some pictures on soon.
:frusty:
