Chassis has grown in lenght?

Johnny and All the other recent repliers, thanks, all advise taken, no, no longer shackles used, I will check on the grease nipple as well as possible obstruction, preventing full extension.

I have no idea if the "new" 109 was a 6 cylinder, definately a diesel though, as the filters and everything else as well as some very bad old diesel was found in tank. But even if it was a 6 cylinder, why then whould my 2.25 petrol engine just bolt onto the fromt engine mountings on chassis.

I am gonna give it a go now, want to get rid of these pen-pushing clothes and get into the garage and swing some spanner around. If I find the problem I will be sure to post.

I have managed to bolt the front shaft on, but it is fully extended, so for time been, I am going to leave it as is and concentrate on completing the bulkhead and start assembling the rest of the body, if I discover in process reason why I have no further extension on shaft, I will attempt to rectify, otherwise, if and when all is in place and distance still a problem, I am going to get local engineering outfit to make up two spacers that I will fit either side of shaft, is there any reason I should not do this, or is it acceptable?

straight six was petrol anyway. so unless converted to a diesel at some point. it won't be a sixpot chassis.

Indeed, very true. I was thinking of mine at the time, my engine mounts have been moved back to take the diesel lump.
I believe a defender gearbox is a bit longer, it's hardly one of those on there is it

Hi All

Well I have not had much of a chance to work on the Landy or Skud-Skud (Shake-Shake), as my my youngest daughter named her. The welding of the bulkhead is the main delay and them we are moving house after twenty odd years. Once I have managed to get the bulkhead sorted and fitted, I will hopefully regain momentum and get the project running. Still not sure if front shaft length has been sorted, but it is bolted to both ends!!!, allthough at a stretch.

I would like to post some pics of my project and Johnny, your project kept me glued to the laptop, specialy the pictures, please tell me how to upload them so that they are nice and visible, some of the posts on the forum have pictures, but they are hell of a small or difficult to open.

Cheers

reet with regards to the big pictures i use photobucket

1 click the share thingy in the blue tab below the pic you want to use
2 itll enlarge the pic in a seperate window ( click the get link code button at the top right corner of this )
3 this will repoen as another window with a list wich i copy and paste the link for bulletin boards and forums 1 up from the bottom of this list ( has full size written next to it )

when ive done this

on here to attatch a pic click the icon aon the task bar at the top of your reply box wich looks like a little blue/green globe with a pair of binoculars infront of it

erase the HHTTP/ thing out of its box then paste the link code in there click ok and this will come up as a full size image on the finished reply or post

with regards to my resto project im currently collecting parts n stuff fer the next big chunk of the thing ( engine rebuild ) then itll be an update per day again till i get the smoke issue sorted out

so watch this space ;);):D:D

good luck with your build and have fun :cool:

Thanks Johnny

We moved house some 100 kilometers away and e-mail was installed today, so now I am on the air again. I will follow your instructions on the Photobucket thing and see If I get it sorted and post some pics. good luck in sourcing parts to get the smoking thing sorted.

Sorry Guys

I have started on the project again and want to attempt to finish all within next two months, budget allowing. I accidently added a photograph of the donor 109 being towed behind the FREELANDER to my workshop. At least now I know how to post photographs!

Will get this project on the go and documented soon, thanks for all the inputs so far.

Thanks SamC88, it is all taken down to pieces at the moment, but will hopefully be back on the road soon. i will start posting some pictures of this restoration project soon.

What is meant by "High Capacity Pick-up", is it just the fact that this is a LWB?

That is the donor vehicle and yes, when I looked at the photo the front wheels looked very close to the front of the wheel arch and that made me wonder about the "growth of the chassis", but keep in mind that as she stands there, no engine and other front end bits and pieces so weight obviously a factor.

I have for the time put the front prop issue aside and want to concentrate on the rest of the rebuild, will check again once everything else is in place. if indeed the prop is to short I will consider adding spacers or have the prop lenghtened.

noticed right front brake shoes catching and shuddering when pushed back, so I need to remove the hub and check and then take it from there.

Want to fit auxilary front tank below driver seat, salvaged off the original 88 but a bit in the dark as to mounting position and possible addition of outrigger, any clear pics as to position and mounting procedure will be welcome. Standard rear mounted tank sorted, no problems there.

Will have two filler caps and an electric pump to fill the larger tank from the auxilary? The whole heater array on both vehicles beyond repair. Has anyone fitted an alternative system or do I try and source parts in working order and stick with the original.

Hi Rooikat,
I just joined the forum a couple of days back. I know you posted this a few years back, but what you described with the front propshaft being too short is IDENTICAL to my problem. I'm doing up a 76 SWB S3 soft top and have the engine & gearbox sitting on the chassis with some new parabolic springs. I've checked everything and I'm certain it's all standard. I also reckon it's sitting too high and hence the shaft is too far forward. Can I ask, how did you solve that problem?
Cheers, Bill
