Hello there.

I would be grateful for some advice on the purchase of an N reg 300tdi 72k miles from a dealer.

Body looks good.

Underneath chassis is generally covered in light rust which is best described as flaking light rust.

It is as though the outer layer of the edges of the chassis flake away in places if you pull away at it, although it seems as thought it is still solid below this layer. Is this a major rust problem or just something to look out for in the next few years?

Bulkhead looks ok.

Rust bubbles though paint on lower doors – would these need replacing at some point?

Also, I noted the usual footwell pools of water – should a dealer be sorting the water inlet as best as they can before selling it? They just said “all landys do this”.

Engine seemed sweet and drove v well.

£6.4k

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

The rust on the chassis looks pretty superficial to me but others here will advise better.

Price seems a lot? Is it a County station wagon?

Cheers for looking Steve

Yes County - guess price upped a little due to lowish mileage and dealer.

I would suggest from the photos that the rust is superficial and could be treated very easily with a wire brush, elbow grease and waxoyl or similar.

The price seems a bit high.

I agree underneath seems reasonable... but for 6.4k I would expect a minter. From what you describe it is average only. leaking water, doors blistering. Forget the low mileage, yes its attractive but thats the only thing going for it. Does it have a full service history? I am guessing it does not seem to have been cherished by the last owner. Oil should be changed every 5k... MOT? Warranty?... worth an RAC inspection if you are serious and not sure what to look for.
I would have a serious look around (maybe you have) and dont buy the first one you see.... I would expect to pay under 5k for it (private). I only paid 5k for a 1997 110 CSW with 115k.... I sold a M reg 90 with 140k in good condition for 4k and that had 5 new tyres, new rear x member, body cappings, waxoiled, no leaks, A bars etc.... pics are on my profile.
You need to look behind the door cards for rust to the door frames at the bottom.... pools of water dont sound good... the odd drip is expected. Mine doesn't leak.
I wouldn't pay 6.4k for it and the dealer should have it A1.... he hasn't done anything!! From what you describe... much better about for that price.
