Classic Charging problem

Hi guys currently pulling my hair out lol,,summary,,,battery warning light comes on while driving,,car comes to stop,,battery drained ,not charging,. So got it home charged and tested with meter at the battery,,reads 12.6v but when running no 14v just slowly drops. Got new regulator and fitted,,worked ok for a test ie putting 14.5 v when tested at the battery.
The next day back to square one no input at the battery,,,,,got and fitted another regulator still no good,,,heres the kicker if tested from the earth of the battery to the output stud on the back of the alternator it reads 18v,,when tested at the pos of the battery nothing,,,,so where is the current going?

18V is miles too high. seems like a duff alternator. have you tested continuity between alt and battery?
It might help if we knew what vehicle :eek:
 
What could cause the regulators to blow? if indeed that is the problem,,or what else could stop the charging process? I dont want to get another alternator only to find the same problem if that makes any sense
 
yes run a con check from the battery pos to the stud on the alternator and nothing,,,with both regulator packs,,,there is a connection between the battery pos and the starter motor
 
alt may have to go as you say,,,but been reading about the dash warning light circuit which may have some thing to do with it?

18 volts at the back of the alternator and nothing at the positive of the battery? There is probably a high resistance in the cable from the alternator to the battery or it's open circuit, the wire can corrode away inside the insulation. It's also possible the earth link from the engine to the chassis has failed.
 
Different problem.
Your old one was diode pack failure.
This is no connection on the main lead from the alt to the battery.
From my LR RRC factory manual.
Charging circuit resistance test
22. Connect a voltmeter between either of the alternator terminals marked + and the positive terminal of the battery.
23. Switch on the headlamps & start the engine. Set the throttle to run at approximately 3000rev/min.
Note the voltmeter reading.
24. Transfer the voltmeter connections to the frame of the alternator (its outer metal casing) and the negative terminal of the battery and again note the voltmeter reading.
25. If the reading exceeds 0.5 volt on the positive side or 0.25 volt on the negative side, there is a high resistance in the charging circuit which must be traced and remedied.

I suspect as others have said & based on your 3rd post the main lead from the alt to the starter motor is defective/not connected.
