Decided finally to change the PAS pump on the TD4 has the steering is getting very heavy at low revs. Managed to pick a brand new pump up cheap.

Anyone done this before on a TD4? Rave CD suggests removing various bits to get at it from above and Haynes suggest via the side removing the wheel arch liner. Had a look on Sat and neither looks that great an option as access looks very limited and there's a risk of getting fluid on the alternator (which also looks to be a pain to change). Looks like a full day job to me.

Any ideas?

I have heavy (er) steering on mine at tickover - i just give it a few revs and whack the wheel round sharpish! I guess one day the pump will give up. Does yours have a sort of rough sound from the drive belt system that shuts up when its warm? I'm thinking that it was me water pump...

Now replaced PAS pump - what a difference to low speed turning. Cars a joy to drive again now.

Got a brand new one on ebay from the steerlers for £70 quid, normally about £150 exchange and £250 new from my local steeler.

Decided to get my mechanic to change it whilst on holiday - not sure of cost yet.

Haven't got the old one back yet to take appart and see what wrong with it. It got worse the more it was used so I suspect the seals had gone.
