Changing hi to low and back.

Hi all!
Please dont shoot me on this 1 if ive missed something obvious but...

The other day i knocked my hi/low lever while fitting a stereo to a disco 1 i just picked up. (first landy since owning a lifted freelander - so obviously not used to having it)

Drove off down the road and the lever slipped into neutral. Could i get it back into hi? could i hell... eventually after sitting like a complete burk for 5 mins i put it in low (easily) and pulled over.

From then it took 10 mins of "playing" to get it to "CLUNK" back into hi!
To this day i dont know what i did? should it go in easily or is there a knack? Im a tad scared to take it out of hi again incase i cant get it back.
I know the clutch on it isnt great, would that cause a prob?

mine was stiff at first too, I found if your rolling forward in neutral at about 5mph you can get it in easier, keep changing from high to low and it should get easier
 
its a manual...
I dont have the owners manual, but now uve mentioned it, i DO have the old LR RAVE cd that i used for my freelander...
 
Going from Low to High is easier when rolling and double de-clutching .. ie clutch, into neutral, off clutch, back on clutch and into high, off clutch ... ;)

It is a procedure, but there is a knack to work it properly and smoothly, especially when using low box for, say, setting off when towing heavy loads.

Practice will make it easier for when you might need to use it regularly like when laning and going from lanes to road to lanes to road without having to stop at every change of surface. ;)

Normal method
Manual models:
With the vehicle stationary and the engine
running, depress the clutch and then move
the lever fully forward (or backwards) in TWO
distinct but positive moves - ’high to
neutral’.... ’neutral to low’ (or vice versa).
If there is resistance to the gear engaging, do
not force the lever. Instead, with the main
lever in gear, release the clutch momentarily
and then try again.

my high and low was stiff to engage when i got it but a good soking of the linkage with wd 40 freed it up and no problem since :smash:
 
thankyou all..
ill try it again over the weekend! Really wanted to get it all worked out before going on the lanes and getting stuck somewhere.
 
I find it helps to be slowly bringing the clutch up (with hardly any revs) as you pull the lever back to High range, should help it take up the drive and drop in
 
mine was solid when I got mine, dont think it had ever been used. WD40, brute force and she's been like silk since. I got an auto, and at first took some "rocking" or a short drive 10-15ft to engage/disengage.

Mine too, I don't think the previous owner used it. I now make a point of using it every few days (in a straight line) just to keep the linkage nice and free for when I do need it.

If you don't use it, it'll stop working......and that's what I tell the wife ;)
