Changing fuel filter on Freelander XEDI

I seem to be doing something wrong trying to change the fuel filter on my Freelander xedi 1999.

I disconnected the old fuel filter, attached the new filter, tightened the connections and then started pumping the inline hand pump to fill the filter with fuel and bleed it through the screw at the top - following Haynes - but nothing happened. The new filter stayed empty so rather than kill my engine I put the old filter back on and luckily as it was full of diesel the engine still worked!

Any ideas what went wrong?

Have you got the pipes the wrong way around when fitting the new one ?

No, I was really careful. For some reason the hand pump didn't seem to be pushing fuel into the filter?

Just to finish this off - I went to a garage and it turned out that the hand pump was not working which is why the fuel wouldn't go through the filter - need to get a new hand pump!

no wunda Hippoos are crap if you have to pump the fuel thro by hand.
