Has any one managed to change a turbo on a td4 with out dropping the ird. The reason I ask is that when starting to strip down the old girl to change the turbo that let go at 80 on the motorway, some one in the past has taken a short cut changing the clutch by chisling a bit of the sump and ird to get to the bolt to get the box off, which has cracked the lower mounting it is only through the casting and the ird does not leak, If take out the ird this part of it will part company with the rest of it and not sure if it will go back on or worse crack into main body of ird.
I have looked at taking the rocker cover off and trying to access it from above however not sure if it would work and not cause more work.
As for the turbo letting go unknown, crankcase filter changed at last service 4 months ago, it has done 115000 k so may be just old age, have all ready stripped out the intercooler/pipe work to degrease it all, any thought of the best way to clean the intercooler.

what does it say inn ones haynes manual ?.

Thanks for replies, have got some solvent degreaser that has done a good job, as for turbo took the ird out, looking at the turbo its the only way. Mind you if it was in bmw a it would have been an easy job as there would have been no ird in the way. Its what you get when landrover use an engine that was designed for another car
