IFAIK car radio coax is fine for CB - it probably is RG58 which is 50ohm

RG8 is a bit thick - a real bugger to fit PL259 's to. Or did you mean RG58??

RG58 is also the old coax networking cable.....I always used that as I had tons of it. Still have somewhere.

:D

Yeah I meant 58 me keys is sticking

Whoops missed the 5 Me keys are all sticky??

That makes more sense - there were going to be lots of questions about how you used RG8 !!!!!

It would make great cable, but would be pointless and very difficult. The stuff barely bends.
Great for running up to an aerial on your house roof, though.

Anyway, if you know what you're doing, and get the matching right, you can use virtually anything as an aerial.
I once entered a top-band (3.5MHz) competition with a base loaded scaffolding pole  It worked, sort of - though we didn't win by quite a long way;)

Have also used a barbed wire fence, and (my favourite) a coat hanger for 2m

That's like the box I had. I wonder if I still have mine, can't imagine I would have thrown it out.

EDIT : not exactly the same as mine. Mine matched it for a normal aerial as well - didn't need a CB aerial. It had adjustment screws so you could tweak it to match properly using VSWR meter.

ive seen one like that on another site, not got a cb yet myself just picking tips up for when i fit one to me 110

ive used a pringle tube to make a wifi antenna

Legal CBs only transmit at 4watts, so ciggy lighter is fine. OK they're crap, but they do the job.

You can get interference from them, but usually not.

Oh, and just to be paranoid - you can void your insurance by fitting a CB. Some policies have clauses that insist you don't do DIY electrics, or they won't cover you for fire. You may want to check !!

most of that sounds bollix to me

:D:D:D

Not sure exactly which bit you're refering to, but there is a similarity here between Landys and radios

'Normal' people think you have to do everything by the book, whereas enthusiasts know you can hack stuff to work.

Landy owners run on waste chip fat, where normal people stick to 'approved fuel'
Radio enthusiasts make aerials out of coat hangers, where normal people stick to 'approved CB aerials'

etc etc etc

But yes, most of it is bollix :D

Just bought some 15mm copper tube for a 2m/70cm J pole.

OK

I've never had interference from a lighter socket - they usually go fairly much straight back to the battery. If you do pick up alternator whine, then a suppressor will fix it. Otherwise, just run a new power straight form the battery - which is what you need to do anyway if you have a real radio that does 50+ watts

Insurance thing was from memory, and when I fitted my radios to my Metro - so early 90's. I could be way off, or it may just have been my insurance at the time.

Not an ideal aerial, but a classic :D

Did you get it to work well?

be honest i ****ed it up but it was still good for the 120ft to the shed so didnt bother to make another, and no different flavours dont affect the range:D

apperantley the size is perfect for 2.4ghz
