on sunday some bastard cut the catyletic converter off my defender,it will cost over £300 to replace anyone out there any useful ideas how to secure this part as to stop this happening again. the police say this type of crime is now common place in the uk.so all 4x4 owners be warned.

If they cut it off then obviously there is no way of securing it to stop it happening unless you make the exhaust out of a material that is harder than a saw, which would be unfeasible! Only other option is to get a zone alarm (which detects the proximity of people), or one which detects when the car is being earthed, or just connect it up to the mains!

PS Why are you only warning 4x4 owners? Never happened on me Audi Tuattro!

or get a "Clip off cat" and a piece of clip on pipe, clip on the cat for the MOT and then clip it off and put on the pipe for the rest of the year!

last year my exhaust went just before the mot was due, so before i went to get an exhaust i went to the garage, where i normally take it an was told that if it's a diesel it does not need to have a cat on it, it is more of a partical filter than a cat and was also told it would have to be a proper jobsworth that would even consider failing it coz the emissions would be well within legal requirements, an that was the tester who is a fair bloke any way.

if yers gots a doozel yer dunts need a pussy to pass the test, (unless the tester is a **** bucket)

if yer has a petrol you'll not pass the emissions test without it

if you runs auto-gas you dunt need one

It seems a lot of work for a few quid, round here cats are fetching about £25 tops.
If your Deepender is a diesel, the thief has done you a favour mate. :D:D

they are not nicking em to sell em on , they are nicking em to strip the precious metals out of to weigh in for scrap , there is amongst other precious metals about 1 gram of pure platinum in a catalytic convertor and this is what they are nicked for according to my mate the copper .

I think that was back last year when scrap was through the roof. I may well be well of the mark though, as i can't remember the last time the scrappie came to work.

It does also depend on the cat, a cat on a ford festia is obviously going to get less than one off a V8 Rangie.

last year when scrap was high value it was about 40k per kilo so 40 quid of platinum in a cat but theres other stuff in there thats worth a few quid too ...
