Same story, different heading, i dont think enough people read this last time. My 1.8 freebie has started to get a bit rattly in the morning but seems fine when its warmed up ( know where im going) after 10 minutes into my journey home the oil light flikered and a slight vibration was felt but before i could pull off the road all hell broke loose. A big end has failed, i find this odd as i thought they all went together, any way its knocked a hole in the block and jammed the motor but before i had chance to dip the clutch it seems to have stripped most of the coggs in the gearbox and the IRD , bent the propshaft and broken two rear diff mounts. Ive had cars with knackered big ends before and this sounded nothing like that, it was a shock as its done 55k with full main dealer history . Ive had about 15 land rover products over the years , series , disco , rangie , but i cant afford this kind of motoring. Any way Merry Christmas to all.

dude yer got my comiserations or how ever yer spell it. it just a pity it dint manage to burst into flames least yer could have got a insurance claim

yup - we all sympathise - wont help tho.

just remember - the "it only happens to poorly maintained vehicles" - aint true - it can happen to YOU!

Thats a first!
K-series bottom ends are nearly indestructible.

The fact that it was rattling would suggest noisey drivetrain, tappets etc

Was she low on oil, or failed oil pump?

The bearing wear pattern will confirm low oil when the engine is stripped down.

Sorry to hear of your horror story

If it done the block then it's chucked a rod. Thats a whole lot more serious than a big end going as you now know. IME thats usually a piston breaking up or seizing solid. Sorry to hear it. Good excuse to drop a deisel in?

Ive lost interest in it so its gone to the crusher. It was a minter but only a T reg that cost £2000.I bought this car knowing the reputation but i thought surely not every one of them could be a bad car,????????????
