Hi Bobbler, completely right the engine breathes better without the EGR or the cat, resulting in cleaner burning, better mpg and more responsive engine.

Logic out the window, do it and enjoy. I've done 5 x tdi and 1 x TD5 and they all improved in perf and mpg.

NEVER had any mot problems.

I know this mite sound thick but i am new here and just trying to get me head round this what dose a EGR stand for (please be nice) dave

Exhaust gas recirculation

its kinda like a filter in a sense when new it would have been doing its job as they age they just fill with **** and act as restrictor so get rid if you have one:p

It's not at all like a filter.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve works by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine under certain conditions to achieve specific anti-pollution levels in world markets.

Unfortunately with these exhaust gases comes lots of tar-like substance which starts to block up the inlet manifold and the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor This then starts to give inaccurate readings to the engine ECU.

In Europe the mot for diesel engines only measures the smoke in the exhaust so this system is irrelevant. Your car will thank you for removing this system permanently. It will not adversely affect future mot results.
