My project car is running a 3.5L V8, with zenith carbs, out of an old Rover SD1 - same as the pre '86 Range Rover Classic.... To make things difficult in the past someone fitted a Mallory distributor ( not the electronic version ).

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Mallory, like which cylinder should connect to which point on the dizzy??
Or why there's no key-way on the cap to stop it from rotating?

    Any help much appreciated

RPi, V8 Wizard or whatever they want to call themselves were always extolling the virtues of these & other odds & sods.

    # 1 lead is at around 4/5 'o clock as you view the engine whilst draping yourself across the radiator.
Rotor turns clockwise, firing order 18436572. Odd numbers to the right ...
Every dissy cap I've ever encountered has a lug to locate the cap in the correct position … Mallory must be the exception.

@norseman Thanks for the detail, I'll have a look in the morning.... Odd about the cap as I can twist it a good 5deg in each direction which can't be good. :-(

Maybe somebody fitted a generic after-market cap rather than correct one for that distributor ?

Strange though, genuine caps were blue & even a black one (possibly aftermarket) from an old RR dissy that according to the ser. number appears to have been off a carb'd model, I have as a spare has a location lug.

Does the dizzy body have a locating lug?...I messed about for ages trying to get points for my 101 V8 and gave up and bought electronic dizzy best thing I did problem I had was vehicle was originally 24v with a dizzy fitted from an unknown 12v vehicle...cost me 120€ with coil suggest you do the same V8 are notorious for throwing probs with caps, leads and rotora if not genuine...

Ominously the aluminum body has no key way or lug just a smooth round surface...
Looks like I may be swapping out for an electronic one.

    Just a thought.
You only have 2 clips? Are they 180 apart or slightly offset?

There has to be a way to only put it on 1 way.

Edit :Never worked with a Mallory so guessing.

    Pics may help.
