Spec does make a difference to the price. But not as much as seller's believe. Get the spec you want, or you'll always feel you are missing something.
There are things that are important to me. For example, I didn't even look at Freelander's that didn't have the winter pack. The reason for that was cost. It's several hundred pounds to retrofit the HFS and FBH. So better to spend a bit more and get what you want.

Well I traveled 80 miles yesterday to look at a td4 sport was told on the phone it was immaculate and no faults.
Got there and engine was missing and you couldn't see for smoke it was top money too. Then got back and traveled 70 miles opposite way to a supposed brilliant vehicle only 60k miles "you won't find a better one" I was told. It was scratched all over and when I test drive it there was a horrible banging sound for drivetrain.
Looked at the one I originally posted about done 120k was nice car but no history not even a service book!
Hence I'm still looking is it too much to ask for an honest description of a vehicle nowadays?!!

The one with 120K looked like a decent vehicle. Service history is important, but not the end of the world, if you know what you are looking at, and the price is representative of its no history status. If it was around £2K it would be a better proposition.

It's not uncommon to get sellers making the car out to be something it's not.
Unfortunately there's a lot of over priced dross out there. There are diamonds in the rough however;)
 
Well, I traveled over 2 hours this morning to the above dealership. I asked numerous questions regarding the freelanders over 4 phones calls yesterday after I told the salesman my perils of my previous car searches I asked of an "honest assessment" The salesman "supposedly" test drive the car on my request and told me it was perfect on my final phone call last night, I arrived this morning and upon my test drive the gearbox whined terribly when lifting the throttle and dash board lights kept on when driving. I specifically asked about the lights going out on start up and engine and gear box condition.
I am extremely disappointed and wandering if there really are any "decent" dealers about.
Rant over!!!

I always buy privately now as dealers will always try to screw you. You can usually tell a lot from the ad and how it's worded.
Questions to ask:
Is the V5 in your name and address? First question I ask and very important as if not or a bit evasive avoid!
Any accidents or damage?
Mileage? Always ask whether in the ad or not as many peeps exaggerate a little.
Condition?
How long have you owned it?
Then have a general chat and you can get a feel for the seller. You'll always situations where you wasted your time but that is just part of it. ;)
 
Well I have finally got one, a 5 door td4 adventurer in black. Done 109000k service history and few receipts. Drives lovely no smoke. There is a banging noise when hitting potholes have had a look and rear bearing on Vcu is about buggered. Is this an easy job? Also I would like to put some bigger tyres on as there is so much room in the arches. What size tyre could I go up to on the standard 16 alloys? Or maybe find some 17s of the bay? If so what size on a 17?
Just think it would look so much better with the arches filled up more.

NB, check them while the wheels are on the ground. Don't ask how long it took me to figure that one out. :oops:
