car jack location ? also what tonnage needed

IMHO bottle jacks are better on a disco because they have more travel and can be placed on thick wooden blocks safely ,also better because they can be used on roughish ground as they don't need to move like a trolley jack.
 
thanks to everyone for their replies,
after concidering all, i have gone for a bottle jack, they didnt have a 2 or 3 tonner in stock, so for a fiver more i got an 8 tonner,
but now ive got it home it looks big, so waiting for the snow to stop so i can see if it fits under axle etc :doh:
 
Ok, so i have checked the manual for jacking points for changing wheels, im happy with that, on axle under spring, tested my new bottle jack and it does fit under there fine,
The only place it wont fit is directly under the diff, is there ever an occasion when i might need to jack under here, ??

My only other concern was that the jack in the manuals picture has like a y piece which sits nicely under axle, where as mine is just a round end, so im hoping it wont slip :eek: any tips to prevent this hapening

Does the jack fit when you have a flat tyre?

well Blue beasty, i have just checked and the answer is NO !!! it doesnt, :frusty:, measured from floor to rim approx 15cm, then jack to axle approx 8cm , so no where near assuming it was a complete flat , which we assume it will be .

so thank you for pointing that out, it's a trip back to the shop for me to exchange it now,

oh well , could have been worse could have been on the side of the road , wondering " why didnt i think of that "
 
cheers, i probably would have done but have already paid for this one , so i guess will just exchange for a smaller one, im guessing the postage would be quite alot too, heavy old things.

not sure if they would give me a full refund,
especially as im using it tomorrow to change my wheels over :D
