hi if i fit a becm off a 4.6 petrol p38 to my 2.5 diesel, will it work ok? both my old and new becm are high level ones. thanks

As far as I am aware...No... the EDC and BeCM handshake is different to the BeCM and petrol ECU handshake.
The same also goes true for the GEMS and THOR BeCM and Engine ECU's too....
Also a Hello my name is blah and the usual introduction wouldn't go a miss either...jumping straight in with a Q is like trying to get yer end away without a drink and expensive meal beforehand...!!!

Its can be done after the original becm has been unlocked and the information is swapped over to the replacement unit...

I disagree with you. Only certain becm's can be programmed from a diesel engine to a petrol. This can't be done with them all.
The problem is irrelevent to whether they're highline or lowline.

They want to use a petrol one on a diesel.
Rick I'd be interested to know why the settings can't be changed from petrol to diesel?

I was under the impression that once a becm is unlocked the information could be swapped over.
So would I, unless its an early/late becm PCB incompatability type thing???

A Land Rover Main Dealer uses a Testbook for diagnostics, once a becm has been locked the testbook cannot unlock it, the BBS SMO35 software module allows the becm to be unlocked and the information edited, although it seems it may not be possible to swap info between all becm types.

All the settings can be extracted, filed & programmed to another becm, that's not the problem.
The problem is with the software level & series of becm.
I just cannot indulge this information as it's taken years to fathom out & it keeps us way ahead of any competition. Put it this way. Just from the lids of these becm's i have four tall piles, each one 12ft high. We've probably got more becm's than anyone else in the world. The amount is easily in four figures.
We give endless advice to the main dealers, not just for becm's, but for all diagnostic issues. Testbook i mock, it's crap!
So, having this level of experiance & knowledge isn't something i can just say to you, " Here it is, this is how you do it".

So it has to be down to software mod levels in the fixed firmware making some changes impossible. Nothing ever stays the same with LR, no wonder they struggled to be profitable, even cars from the same year have different components. Economy of production comes from bulk purchasing, but maybe they had to keep switching suppliers due to cash flow problems:-(

He used to frequently correspond with me regarding these becm's, & i helped him out whenever i could.
It's ok having the software for unlocking these becm's, but repairs are completely different kettle, & when you look at the cost of the equipement, other than the SMO35, you'd easily spend £12k plus, just to achieve basic repairs. Then there's the obsolete components that keep doubling in price, so realisticaly, £40 to £50k would set you up.

Maybe your protecting your business interest, Until I see a response from Irish rover confirming what you say, I'll take what your saying with a pinch of salt as I think your exaggerating.
Plus as I will never have another p38 as they are a pile of ****, it does not affect me.
