I had a Ford Focus, it used to have an OFF switch for the interior lights, so if I open door, lights stay off. Now I have a 05 register Freelander. The interior lights don't have an OFF switch.

Can the Freelander's interior lights be changed for one that have an OFF switch? Either a DIY job or let a Land Rover specialist do it for me.

There was no interior light off option. So you'll either need to remove the bulb, or modify the existing light unit to incorporate an off, or find another light that fits the space ,that has an off switch.

Of topic. Have you done the One Wheel Up Test and made sure it has 4 identical tyres all round.
If not then do the OWUT and get 4 identical tyres fitted. If left with odd tyres, then being able to turn off the interior light could be the least of your problems.

I know there is no OFF switch on the interior lights as standard. I just wanted to know if the unit could be changed for another unit that have one. I assume maybe like with so many Land Rover aftermarket parts, maybe there could be one, or not. Removing the bulbs is not an option for me.

But I am sorry, I am confused with the "One Wheel Up Test", what does this have to do with changing the interior light unit for a model with an OFF switch? By the way, yes, I always have four identical tyres, always like to have all wheels having same brand and model. (When I first bought it, it came with three different brands! So I had them all replaced with same brand.)

LR didn't make another interior light unit for the FL1, and even that was "borrowed" from the Rover 800.

So you'll either need to find something that fits from another vehicle, or modify the existing one by adding a switch.

Nothing. But it's something that every FL1 owner should do, so expensive IRD failure can be avoided. ;)

I didn't realise the interior light in freelanders doesn't have an off switch, I never looked at mine that closely. I don't know why manufacturers don't have a dashboard switch for the interior lights like my series 3 has, especially for cars where the interior light is hard to reach from the drivers seat.

Well, surely there may be third party aftermarket parts? Surely some other company make some interior light unit? If not, okay, guess I'll have to see what else there is.

As for the IRD failure, I'm aware of it and have heard of it, my decision to have all my tyres of same brand and age wasn't really just for this, it was really just for the most common reasons. You know, like the usual road handling, braking, fuel effect, blah, blah, blah, reasons for wanting to have all tyres use the same brand. But, still, thanks for the tip,

Yeah, neither did I, it wasn't until when I wanted to switch it off one night, that I found out there was no OFF switch. I figure since most people could buy aftermarket parts, maybe there would be a unit that could replace the standard one.

If you find a replacement light fitting come back and let us know, there will probably be a few freelander owners interested to know.
