Ok thought I would start a thread based around those silly ideas in your head and chucking them out there.

First one

I have some u section 3mm steel sections I want to cut up to make a work bench for my legendary red boxes.

Can I use my old chop saw with an abrasive wheel or will it fk it up?

Saw would be better than a grinder if not take it to your local fabricator if its just chopping it into a couple of sections with the circular saw they should do it free or at least my place does if its something that'll take less than 5 mins to do

It's gonna be substantial. Worktop on top, sliders too for these boxes. 12 on total. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1346660886.552814.jpg

Interesting idea on the water,,,, ive seen a similar idea used to pre heat cooking oil into the fuel filter

Could you in theory wind copper piping round the exhaust manifold with an outlet and boil water?

yes and use that energy in the water to generate electricity and use that to charge the battery so you dont need an alternator... theoretically

yu wouldnt want to - an exaust emits nasty gases.... If you cool and condense them, you will get Sulphuric and Carbonic Acid which, funnily enough, corrodes through exhausts.....

going back to chopping metal.... angle grinders are designed to use abrasive discs... 9 inch grinder spins at arround 8k revs a similar sized wood saw designed to use toothed blades only spins arround 4k, so sticking an abrasive disc in a wood saw wont be very effective and youve also got the issue of spindle size... 9 inch abrasive disc is 22 mm bore which isnt a standard saw blade bore.....having said that ive seen it done, but wouldnt recommend it . you can get angle grinder stands to turn them into static chop saws, but most people use then hand held and cut to a marked line.... if you use overlap joints accuracy of cutting isnt really an issue...even with butt joints a good welder can fill any gaps.

Cheers ricc

As for using manifold copper don't erode the same and coiled around the pipe would have thought just conducted the residual heat. Dunno if it shouldnt get gases from the exhaust in as round the outside.

It was just red hand looking for water boiler. Figured as long as engine running that is hottest part of the motor

The idea with the copper pipe is exactly what I intended to do on my disco, but then one of the old boys i work with used to be on a council sewer gang, and their lorry was the nut in terms of some of the mods they made to it. He said they tried the coper pipe on the exhaust, but found it didn't make much contact and didn't work too well. SO they added a pipe onto the coolant circuit and coiled that in to a water barrel. As you on your way to the job, the barrel on the back was heating up nicely. I think i'm going to mess around with it at some point. Few more jobs to do first. Also, I was going to weld up a cast iron plate that fitted over/into the exhaust manifold, see if I cant get some cooking going on in the engine, when stopped of course!

Mr Noisy had something on his thread about the coiling of copper round the exhaust, he was going to use it to warm his washer fluid before it hit the screen, im pretty sure he even bought a ready made jobby for doing it, or i could be on smack again and fantasizing, just have a look through his pics of my disco thread im pretty sure its in there somewhere.

edit, found it here

Ok here's a new one. Lil rumour mill spawned idea. Can a td manifold fit to a disco 200tdi. It's easy to get hold of the defender inlet from intercooler but a manifold is a nightmare.

I don't like the downpipe I got for my conversion and would much rather just convert the tdi engine to a defender tdi.

Possible?
