Can I tow my caravan on my licence?

I understand but you keep quoting the part that says " as long as the combined MAM is not over 3500kg" then saying you can carry more lol the trailer CAN be over 750 kg but has to be braked and the total MAM still can't be over 3500kg
 
Conditions you must meet

You can drive a minibus within the UK as long as the following conditions apply:

-the maximum weight of the minibus is not more than 3.5 tonnes - or 4.25 tonnes including specialist equipment for disabled passengers, eg a wheelchair ramp

-you're not towing a trailer

It says to me

If the trailer is over 750kg the total weight of car + trailer can be a max of 3500kg
If the trailer is under 750kg you can tow it with a 3500kg car total weight of 4250kg



I'm not sure were mini buses have come into it but there category d1 aren't they. I'm not sure if they are part of the post 97 test.

The combined MAM only applies if the trailer has a greater than 750kg MAM.

You can drive any vehicle up to 3500 MAM plus a trailer up to 750 MAM which gives a theoretical combined MAM of 4250.

But your Landy is 3050kg MAM so you're stuck with a trailer MAM of 750kg
 
The mini bus issue does make another point, if people have passed there test after 97 then they can't drive an older 110 or 130 station wagon with over 8 seats because they haven't got cat d1.

(At least I think they don't)

Now you are ready to find out if you need a B+E licence or not
If the gross weight of your trailer is less than the unladen weight of your car AND the gross train weight of your vehicle and trailer is 3500kg or below, then you do not need to take the B+E test.
However, if the gross weight of your trailer is less than the unladen weight of your car AND the gross train weight of your vehicle and trailer is over 3500kg, you will need to take a B+E test unless you are covered by the exception noted below.

Exception If your trailer has a gross weight of 750kg or below and your towing vehicle has a gross laden weight of 3500kg or below, then you can still tow legally without a B+E licence.

"In a recent prosecution case a driver convicted of towing a trailer without the correct licence was given 6 penalty points on the licence and an £800 fine."

-Now it does say what blue beasty says, which correct or not, I cant find on the dvla website,

also, I am aware of what I personally can tow, I do however want to make this point known and under stood as id rather no one got stopped and was forced to give this government anymore bloody money!

I've never seen a 130 SW?, I have a 110sw which had 12 seats however I'm sure those who have been in the back of a 110 with only 2 others will agree it can be cramped, I took mine out;)

no, just a 3dr county SW on the v5 no seats mentioned, its an exRAF, it was the insurance company that told me it was a 12 seater until I corrected them, it did have 4 benches right enough but I removed 2,

I did see a post possibly either on here or facecloth where some ones V5 said 265seats + driver, was a pic to prove it too!

This I feel is ridiculous - my nan can tow a bigger trailer then I can! I regularly tow ... and would say that I'm pretty seasoned in the art , everywhere I go I often have my 2T excavator on the back , if not that then a trailer full of what ever I've dug out. Has anyone on here actually been stopped , as long as I've towed I've never been stopped and only passed test in 2001. Just of to find some wood to touch ....
 
Simple way to work it, from what I understand and have seen on direct.gov,

People that passed after 97,

You can have a maximum combined tow car and maximum plate weight (man) of 3500kg BUT, the tow car or van must weigh more than the trailer, the

4250kg limit only applies if your driving a 3.5t van fully loaded with a trailer of 750kg that's the only way to break 3.5t on a licence passed after 97

Ex sample, my van weighs 2250kg me all my tools ladders and my 2dogs with half a tank of fuel,

I remove a lot of my tools and tow my caravan has a mam of 1100

Simple fingers van is 2300 + caravan 1100 total 3400, my van has a maximum train weight of 3500 so it is under and I can tow it,

Ridiculous or not that's the way it is and I'm sure many get away with....most of the time

Most get caught out by dedicated squads of police/VOSA/Customs and Excise who set up in random lay-bys and target trailers, mini buses, diesels etc. If you get directed in they give you the works, appropriate licence, dip tanks, trailer brakes, everything.

6 points hurts......especially when your insurance company finds out :eek:

It's not a case of not having the right classification, it's a case of driving without a licence for the vehicle and therefore without insurance as far as the law is concerned.

This has been my point all along, Maybe I'm bad at explaining it!
3500kgs total combined MAM, no more or possible blue strobes and a insurance hike!,

Correct, as per my post the 4250 only applies to a van with disabled ramps ect

please remember these places are selling you things, your not going to be able to blame them if you get pulled, I've operated hire diggers since I could reach the pedals but I don't have a ticket, no one asks and no one cares as its up to you if you want to take the risk, the hire company would only get a slap the the back of the hand. Hell I've had hire vans a few times and I'm apparently not old enough to drive them, quote]
