The Inner CV has completely gone on the drivers side front drive shaft. Can I remove the drive shaft and still drive it? Or is it a case of you can only run it front wheel drive, not rear because of the VCU? It's only going to be a temporary measure until august, when I get some decent leave, so I can do the work all in 1 go.

no you can not do this as the freelander is constant four wheel drive and 70% of the drive is from the front wheels different if it was the back though you could take that one of and get better fuel comsumtion

you coulnd drive with front shaft missing,A it would leak oil B front diff would spin giving you no drive as you have no diff lock for front diff ,as you have no center diff but viscous to drive rear wheels slightly slower than front to give you that front wheel drive feel,you can remove drive to rear without effecting front

That's not, exactly true.
If you could stop the oil leak then, Shirley - the front diff wud spin like crazy, causing the front half of the prop to spin, the VCU to lock up, and thereby give yu rear wheel drive. In exactly the same way as if yu lost traction on one front wheel.
I wouldn't advise it, but as a get yu home measure......

Agree with Maddy, as a get you home measure yes, but not till august, you'll knacker your vcu.
Well the time has come to order the new drive shaft, but I'm not sure which one of the 2 part numbers to order.
I think it's TDB104980, but not sure. Can someone confirm please?
It's a TD4, 53 plate, pre facelift.
Will I need to get new bearings aswel? I would rather do them if they are adviseable!
What else should be done at the same time as the drive shaft? IRD oil change?

IRD oil will come out when changing the rhs drive shaft, so make sure you can undo the filler first. Can be a bit of a pig. May as well drain it out first to avoid the mess when the drive shaft is removed. Not sure about bearing, but you may want to change the drive shaft to ird oil seal while your there.

thats the right number (tbh104980) rh side 2a on,would bother changing seal unlees its already leaking or wheel bearings unless worn ,can be tricky without press and first time
