can i put grease in my s2 swivel hubs.

As the title says really ive got a 1959 series 2 and every time it try and move it it floods oil all over my drive from the swivel hubs. would it be possible to empty the oil out and fill them with grease. or is it not so simple.

I would think if the leak is that bad the grease will also escape, also water will probably get in too eventually. What condition are the chrome swivels in? If they're good then you may get away with just replacing the seals. Either way it's probably time to get the spanners out really
 
it had a complete resto about 20 years ago, it was then driven for about 4-5 years and for the last 15 its been dry stored and not driven so the swivels are fine. i went out and looked at them properly tonight and i tightened the plates around the seals so il see how that goes. its only one thats leaking badly the rest are ok but im also wondering if its a viable upgrade if i do end up replacing the seals.
 
its not an upgrade ,lr used cv grease instead of ep90 for service times cost reasons not because its better ,it does just leak less
 
If its that bad you can replace the seal without taking the swivel off by getting a new seal and cutting it neatly in one place. Fit with the cut at the top. I've filled mine with one-shot grease and wish I hadn't...if any water or other crap gets in there I'll have to dismantle rather than drain!

Perhaps you could dissolve/liquefy the grease with diesel or similar?:confused::)
 
"One-shot" is not grease, it's a grease & EP90 mix. Someone on here used to make it, and did a how-to.
So I wouldn't advise just using grease.
 
I can't imagine pure grease doing the job, it tends to get thrown to the outside and the bits that count end up dry!! It would probably end up in the bottom of the swivel joint doing bugger all:confused::)
 
If oil is leaking out water will get in, if as you say your swivels are good I would fit a new seal. Check that the shimming is correct first then put Hylomar in the seal recess and let it go of then push the seal into it and fit the retaining plate.
 
Old seals sealed round the circumference and had to be tapped or pressed in. Some currently available (like from Paddocks) seem a loose fit but in fact have a rubber layer on the inner face of the steel cover - and actually seal nicely.

If you're cutting a seal to replace it (Army practice in fact) remember to unscrew the 2 ends of the spring and refit it. A good idea is to save the old one (by finding its end and unscrewing it - in case you need it.

Interesting to read the comments about water ingress and 'One Shot' (Moly + EP90 mix). Presumably Defenders for which the stuff was intended as they've got CV joints don't suffer from water ingress to their swivels.
