Can I put abs onto my discovery 200tdi

Hi all
Just like to say thank you to all you guys n girls for the info on this site as it has helped me rebuild and keep my disco on the road.
I've tried to search for an answer but have had no luck so I thought I'd post it on here and see if any of you guys or girls know if it's possible
to fit anti locking brakes to my 1993 disco 200tdi.
Would it be a simple job of just adding the ecu and wheel sensors or would I have to change axles and calipers.
Any info on this would be very helpful

Simple? the ecu, hub sensors, wiring, modulator, master cylinder , callipers and brake plumbing which is all available from a scrap 300 series u may need its axles also. ABS only stops the wheels locking allowing u the steer around, so if u need the facility then its for u so buy a 300 the simple option.

Thanks for that seems there's a little more to it then I thought, I have thought about buying a 300tdi but me and my 200tdi have become very close over the last couple of years and I don't want to change her.
I suppose the best option would be to go look in local scrapers to see if I can get the whole system.

After the amount of messing about with mine thats gone on I reckon your lucky not to have it

I just swapped the front sensors and so far the warning light has stayed off which makes no sense at all :der: but :cheer2:.....which reminds me.....you will need a warning light somewhere to let you and mot guys know if its working or not? (it usually isnt)

Buddy leave it the heck alone and go without. ABS is a pain in most old landies so just be thankful you don't have it. Plus you would have to tell your insurance co you have fitted a DIY abs system......good luck with the premium on that one

Don't bother. ABS on my old D1 was a pain in the arse.

Ok guys I get the message I won't bother fitting it so...... I'm not happy with my brakes as they are I use the car daily on very steep hills and I just don't trust them although I've fitted new discs pads and calipers I just feel there not upto the job so any ideas on upgrading them ?

Are they bled with new fluid with a good hard pedal? They should stop you pretty well unless they are spongey

The brakes are solid and do work well but they lock up when I don't want them to mainly when going down steep hills and if pressed too hard at speed as all parts are new except the servo I think it's just the way they are or I am too used to driving modem cars,

ebc vented fronts and pads with ebc rear pads makes an improvement

Just wondering if you should alter your driving style not your vehicle.

Never had mine lock up yet, then again, I seem to rarely touch the brake pedal.

Good idea to leave it well alone, the less complicated they are the easier they are to maintain and keep on the road.

I have wondered if it was just the way I drive lol I have slowed down a lot but my daily drive consists of 50 miles of steep hills and lots of badly maintained roads/tracks so quite a lot of braking needed, maybe thinking about it I should look at my tyres rather then my brakes hmmmm the joy if owning a land rover

Use engine braking

change your driving style on the pedals the only time mine have locked up is one time when the traffic lights changed quick but that was with m/t tyres. if it ent broke dont fix it

i get people that tow on hills that complain about std brakes

The whole point of owing a 200tdi is simplicity, not a songle computer and everything real. Want a car that is stellar at braking (and accelerating) look at BMW. That's sort of a joke. I had DBA drilled rotors on a D2 a while bsck woth EBC pads and stainless steel hoses and a system flush and the became as good as an old LR can be.

thanks for all your comments, and advice i have decided im gonna upgrade my discs pads and calipers and get some decent tyres, been looking on-line and have seen a few upgrade kits so think that's my option. but thanks again all...

Well today at low speed gentle braking I had ABS come on, then a little TC, just a really slippery spot under one wheel as I stopped and restarted.

The occasional lockup happens when the roads are very slippery.

ABS is a safety net not a performance aid

The only time my tyres don't grip is on frosty or snowy roads so ABS activates only at that time of the year, the rest of the year nothing. That's grippy tyres for you..
